I'm at loggerheads with our new LO about the discrepancies with the speedometer in cars, some speedometers are 5MPH out hence why the police give you a percentage off and 5MPH. I've been out and about in the Taxi testing the speedometer against the Sat Nav because the Sat Nav gives you a more accurate reading, the speedometer was showing 60MPH but the true reading off the Tom Tom was 55MPH. He's gone all pissy on me now and called me in to have the speedometer calibrated at a cost of £68 to me. This happened because a driver over Christmas got reported off a customer for doing 44MPH in a 40MPH zone, when I questioned the speed with the LO I said take the speedometer discrepancy away and you have a true speed of 39MPH. The dime bar is from Oxford and is their old LO, I heard he got the shove when the Oxford CSE complaints came out the other year. Basically I've told him to fuck off and take me to court. |

Speedos (85%) arent mechanically linked to anything...they work my magnetic drag on the needle, the odometer is driven by cable and cogs.. Satnavs are next best......although the same sateliites guided cruise missiles in the Gulf war and we all know how that panned out my Taxitronic has a MPH readout that is the most accurate but tyre wear can cause that to alter ove the life of the tyres The taximeter is checked over a measured mile for calibration so must be bang on |

Is the speedo tested at the MOT? Is there a legal requirement to have a working speedo? I was told that there is no such requirement. I was also told that a normal speedo can't be calibrated. We have 2 ex police cars on our fleet with speedos that are retrofitted and can be calibrated. |

He's only been in the job two weeks and he hates me already. Does this boat race look bothered? He didn't like the fact I bought up the CSE by Taxi Drivers in Oxford on his watch. |

It is an automatic failure if the speedometer is not operative at the MOT test. You also can be committing an offence by using a vehicle you know has a fault(fine up to £2500) |

this is taken from the mot testers site. Speedometer Your car will fail the MOT if a speedometer isn’t fitted, is incomplete, inoperative, has a dial glass broken/missing or can’t be illuminated. So it makes no mention of the speedo showing the correct speed it just has to be working. |

The Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 1996 Section 2 http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1996 ... peedometer 19 Speedometers 1. The vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer capable of indicating speed in mph at all speeds mph. up the maximum design speed of the vehicle. 2. For all true speeds up to the maximum design speed of the vehicle, the true speed shall not exceed the indicated speed. 3. For all true speeds of between 25 mph and 70 mph (or the maximum design speed if lower), the difference between the indicated speed and the true speed shall not exceed— V / 10 + 6.25mph where V=the true speed of the vehicle in mph. I always thought that speedos could over read by as much as they wanted but by law could not display a slower speed than you were going, hence why all manufacturers err on the side of caution and over read. Going by the above they can't display slower than actual speed but can only over read by a maximum of 10% + 6.25mph. So you could be doing 40mph but the speedo can show anything between 40 and 50.25mph. Likewise 30 would be 30-39.25mph and 70 70-83.25mph. |
