Hello,
Does someone know in which areas of the UK the terms "cab" or "taxi" can be used when naming a PHV operator company or advertising PHV services? In London the PCO will not let these terms be used for anything other than a London Taxi/Black cab. Is this the same in many places outside London too?
Thanks,

. . . and quite rightly so.

We can't have the public getting confused between Minicabs and London Taxis now can we.

You can of course, as many Minicab drivers do, use the term 'Taxee' or 'Meenecab'.

This is usually used whilst driving eratically, flashing your headlights ( :? ), sounding your horn in an annoying bip bip bip manner, and touting anything thats moves on a Friday or Saturday night.

Quality.

This was discussed on here a few weeks ago. As far as I can see there's nothing in the provincial legislation that precludes the use of the words in association with marketing a firm, with the only prohibition being the use of the word taxi on a PHV vehicle.

It's been suggested on occasion that as long as a firm operates one taxi then it can use that word in its name and in association with marketing, but no one seems to be able to provide a source for that rule.

There may be some local councils that have formulated rules in this regard, but I think that if challenged in court they might have some difficulty upholding them.

Nearly 100% of our customers phone up and ask for a "taxi" even though out of 300+ cars only 7-8 are actually Hac's, and only 2 are Black cabs.

Listen to this then
I was parked up doing some paperwork re banking some cash in the all nighter cash point/deposit safe

up comes 4 girls, they knock on the window as I had the remote door locks on, I opens the window and said "yes", one one the girls said are you for hire, I said yes [great another job to finish off]
they piled in, one of the girls said, "which firm are you" [remember I am a licenced Hack]

I said a licenced hackney carriage, she said to the other girls ok lets get out and get a proper taxi, what do you have to do to convince people

:D sensible girls :D Get a PH home!
Look for the Door sign's,check the fire Extinguisher and First Aid Kit, Then get in and Throw up all over the back seat!
Take it your a Saloon and not a Black Cab?

Some of our hac's now have door sign's on and the punters seem to trust them more for some reason.
The illegal minicabs have a lot to answer for even up here where there aren't any.

I get fed up when people ask which firm you work for, and when you say you don't, they suggest you are working illegally or something like that

That depends if your within or outside London.

Perhaps you don't have as many asylum seekers with uncheckable backgrounds working in your area?

Just wait until they do.
