you buy a used car 3 years old thats "VAT qualifying" for £20,000 plus £4000 vat and thats how its shown on the invoice

later you see the invoice, whilst setting out the amounts seperate does not have a vat number

the garage wants YOUR vat number before they will issue a a vat reciept

dodgy deeds done cheap?

theyve claimed the vat back when buying the car but hope to hang onto the incoming vat?

The garage MUST show the vat number on any invoice they issue. A call to HMRC would not go amiss, especially with the mounts involved. If you enter it on your VAT return and your books get checked, you could be the one in the poo.

A typical scam is you give the garage your vat number, they use it on the next invoice they issue.
