That's a 30 zone? Is there a system of street lights the regulation distance apart? I can jus about see 1 on the left. If not, where are the 30 repeater signs?

Challenge it if you can afford to lose, otherwise the £100 and 3 points.

the exact spot isnt stated, seems the whole mile or so of the road IS 30mph with houses at each end

If it is then it isn't correctly marked (no repeater signs)

If you have no speed signs then you are driving on a 30 miles per road …….

......Or a 70 mph road. 30mph is identified by a system of street lighting. If there are no street lights, 30 repeater signs must but installed.

The photo posted by Wannabee appears to show an adequate system of street lighting and, therefore, doesn't require repeaters. The requirements are not very onerous. It would be easier to tell from a functional GSV link so that we could 'drive' along the road.

That's what I was told about 50 years ago....but it's not what the man on the course said...

In general it's 30mph unless street lights are more than 183 metres apart, or other signs indicate otherwise.

If the lights are 183 metres apart AND it's a 30 zone repeater signs MUST be used.
If there are no street lights and it's a 30, repeater signs must be used.
If there are no lights or they are more than 183 metres apart it's probably more than 30mph but there must be repeater signs stating the correct speed.

It should be noted that the 183 metre rule applies to streetlights on each side of the road, not just the ones on the side you are driving along.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Built-up_ ... ay_Code%29

It's also a requirement that approved signage is placed on each side of the carriageway on every entry to an area where there is a speed limit change.

Can only see one definite street light in Wanna's photo, and the light itself seems partly covered by leaves, and to that degree if you didn't know the road, and it was daylight, the signs on the pole make it look like a pole for direction signs.

Apart from the telegraph pole(?) to the right, the only other evidence of lights I can see are on the other side about where the car in the distance is (blowing the photo up slightly), which are probably within the 183 metres minimum.

Anyway, we can't tell from the photo what's behind etc, so as you say a proper Street View link would be required to assess the situation fully [-(
