Email received from our licensing team.

Dear Drivers

We have listened to concerns from drivers regarding your loss in income suffered during the Covid pandemic. To try to help where we can, we are pleased to confirm that every driver and vehicle which was licenced with us prior on the 1st April 2020, will receive a three month extension on your driver and vehicle licences when you next come to renew. This reflects the three months you may not have worked at all or had your work significantly curtailed during the national lockdown. This may be subject to further review/consideration, should any future lockdowns occur in Melton due to Covid 19.

No action is needed from yourself other than a normal application procedure when your renewal is due, and the one-off three month extension will be applied for you automatically at the time of renewal.

I hope this email finds you safe and well and thank you for your continual efforts to keep Melton moving during these challenging times.

Yours sincerely,

Melton Borough Council

Firstly, I thought that the maximum duration of licenses was set in law?
Secondly, We have to have a Council inspection test and an MOT and most of us have them done at the same time to cut down on the cost because an MOT costs £45.00 and the Council inspection costs £50.00 but by having them together the cost is £55.00 so by extending the vehicle license and presumably the inspection they will be out of sync and thus require 2 separate inspections that will cost a total of £95.00.
Any thoughts?

Many councils are doing likewise.

I suspect they are using money from some Gov fund and don't want to give it to the drivers, and/or there are no staff in the office to do the paperwork.

Would have been better to give drivers a third off their next licenses.

As for the legality I think the Gov covid rules allows this sort of thing.

I have asked them to look at it again and probably give a discount of 25% on aa vehicle badge renewal and a pro rata discount on the 3 year drivers badge. However if someone had just renewed their drivers badge at the start of the year they will have to wait a long time to get the benefit.

I understand that, but I'm not a fan of not doing something just because some might not benefit.

My actual preference would be for them to make some kind of payment to drivers now rather than mess about with the licensing system at all.

what's the AA got to do with it :?:

Seriously though I think as some councils are doing this and some like ours are doing nothing we have quite the hotch potch maybe it would be better if a standard national scheme was brought in which all councils could follow and i think a discount or better still a partial refund would be much better

New email from our council today.

Subject: REDUCED RENEWAL FEE'S

Re: Combined HC\PH Driver Licence No: CD004

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all drivers who provided feedback to the email sent on the 30th October 2020 regarding the free 3 month extension to drivers and vehicle licences.

We have listened to your comments and have agreed instead to reduce the fee's at your next renewal by 23.50 per vehicle and 23.50 per driver. This equates to (and replaces) the 3 months extension we had initially offered.

Your next vehicle renewal will now cost: 70.50
Your next drivers badge renewal will now cost: 262.50

Many thanks again to you all..

Yours sincerely,

Melton Borough Council

Clearly grammar is not a requirement to work for the council.

Better than a poke in the eye.
