Do private hire vehicles have to display a fare sheet in their vehicles ? I’m sure it used to be a condition of the vehicle license but since the two big P/H companies here have started using the meter on the PDA’s I don’t think they bother. Is it a National requirement or is it up to the local LA ?

We have never been asked to display a tariff card. We work on fixed prices and the customer is given the price at the time of booking.

Which is what all operators should be doing.

as long as the customers are actually going to where theyve been quoted for,in my experince the public lie through there teeth about their destination when your quoting a fixed price job

And if they do then the driver contacts the office and puts the new details in and then a new fixed price based on the actual journey is given.

Think it all depends on the local PH licensing conditions.

Many councils insist a chart is displayed if the PH has a meter.

We wouldn't take that booking. If that was a request when we arrived then we would politely say sorry, we don't have the time to wait at the Chinese or extra drops due to previous bookings.

The problem is the punters won't necessarily tell you, or the driver until they are on board.

Then the driver is in the situation where does he or does he not want massive aggro at that time of the night.

This is where we are somewhat different. We don't work late at night for this very reason. We want our drivers to not have to deal with the drunk customer you get late at night so we finish early and enjoy the time off.

Sounds good to me.

Well this is interesting, just found the following under the local government (miscellaneous provisions) act 1976, appendix A of Chester west and Chester licensing policy.

“When driving a private hire vehicle (or a hackney vehicle acting as a private hire vehicle) the driver shall ensure that a copy of the current fare tariff of the private hire operator through which the vehicle is operating shall be available in the vehicle for passengers to inspect upon request”

Think a significant number of councils will have a similar condition.
