According to those figures there are only 34 licensed vehicles here no. it used to around 80. We have over 20% of the total. A lot of those 34 do not do the everyday sort of work. There is a tricycle that just does tours, a few that just do school runs, a few that just do airports. Apart from us doing bookings only there are probably a maximum of 10 other cars that work the ranks. |

2020 is looking like the peak year all around in general. I am expecting numbers to decline year on year going into the end of the decade. Will probably level out and get to an equilibrium around 2030 where the numbers will be significantly below 2020 numbers. |

I suspect that as cab driving is seen by some as a "peripheral" job, a bit like bus driving, as more find better-paying jobs, the number in low paying peripheral jobs decreases. what you are left with is those who decide to make cab or bus driving a full-time job, rather than using it as a standby job. This was pointed out to me by the MD of a rather big London coach company many years ago. during aone of the earlier recessions he had an influx of drivers with PSV licences looking for ful time work. they were in Peripheral jobs, IT consultants, website designers, marketing. Big money for a short period then too many people doing marketing etc. so they drop back to the reserve second job of bus or cab driving. I reckon we're in that situation at the moment. I'm now "past retirement" age and in big demand for bus driving all over the place, turning down work every week for a sensible hourly or daily rate in excess of £20/hour. I don't think I ever got that by being a private hire driver taking all the expenses into account and the amount of dead mileage operating in a rural area. |
