Breakdown of each licensing authority's vehicle, driver, and operator numbers. ( #-o )

Headline figures

As at 1 April 2026, in England, there was a total of:

52,300 licensed taxis, a decrease of 7% compared with 2024

290,000 licensed PHVs, an increase of 13% compared with 2024

417,300 taxi and PHV driver licences, an increase of 9% compared with 2024

34,500 wheelchair-accessible licensed taxis and PHVs, a decrease of 4% compared with 2024

But simply demonstrates why this map and the usual analysis of numbers of this type are pretty useless. Unless, of course, the intention is to demonstrate how ridiculous it all is :-o

But since the DfT seems quite a fan of Wolverhampton then I doubt it's meant to deliberately make the whole thing look ridiculous :?

What are you looking at, precisely?

I see they've got three sets of figures on the spreadsheet, as opposed to two sets in previous years - normally the new data, and the previous set.

But this year it's 2023, 2024 and 2026 (and of course there was a one-year gap this time round when no stats were collected, hence nothing for 2025).

So there are three tabs along the bottom for each of the three years, but as usual the tabs are a bit confusing. At least on my laptop :?

But I see that you can drag the thingy beside the taps along the bottom of the spreadsheet so that all the tabs can be seen at once - didn't notice that before :oops:

But it makes moving between the tabs a bit easier and shows what's going on a bit better as well :)

Apart from the layout of the spreadsheets generally :roll: I don't know why they persist with the misleading way they present regional/county stats and the individual council stats side-by-side - they should make it more clear which are which, and keep present them more distinctly separately

And which, for example, are in each regional stat, or not in any regional stat at all, such as unitary authorities like B&H.

Or at least I think that's what's going on, but it's all a tad confusing, and has certainly been very confusing in previous years :?

Intersting that you mention B&H.

In 2024 they had 600 hackneys; in 2026 they have 568. :-k
