I kid you not!! I strayed out of area a bit yesterday and thought I was seeing things when a plated Ford Fusion pulled up at the airport to drop off passengers! The plate even stated "Licenced to carry 4 passengers" where??? Once I stopped laughing; I drove a couple of hundred yards around a corner and ................ yep - there was another one emblazzened with the same company logo! I have to admit to ringing the relevant LO and asking for the criteria for Licencing and was given the whole speach about engine size, seat size etc and stopped with my mouth on the floor when they said that they rear seat had to be 51 inches across! How do you get 51 inches in the rear of a Fusion?

This tiny little Ford can't actually pass a compliance test - can it? Opps my old man has just read this and has hidden the keys to his Corsa; maybe I should plate that up as the fuel economy has to be far greater than my current 16 miles per gallon...........................

We have a plated 1.8 tdi Ford Fiesta up here, its used for school contracts along with public hire
Our council will licence anything that is under 7 years old and has a min 1.4 engine

We used to have plated pugeot 106's Licenced for 3 passengers, they didnt last long though.
But it beg's the question of why they wont plate 7 seaters for 6 passengers?
The reason is, the seats in in front of the rear passengers (3 row's) would have to be folded to enable them to disembark. But it's the same with the 106's as they're 3 door vehicles!!

I saw a Ford Fiesta with a PCO sticker in the back at Heathrow today.

But FFS don't tell Mr GBC.

Here on Wirral the Vauxhall Meriva is plated for PH. I couldn't believe it when I saw one. What I found even harder to believe though is that there is also a Vauxhall Agila running on PH in the area.

I hadn't seen any new model Astras used as PHVs and I thought that maybe this was because the back seat was too narrow. Obviously though this isn't the case if these smaller Vauxhalls are being plated.

We've also got a Ford Fusion on PH. There was a PT Cruiser too, but that proved too expensive and the driver soon replaced it.

Astra's, Focus etc too - way too small.

Anything smaller than a Mondeo/Vectra/Passat is too small in my opinion.

i have seen a ford focus and fiesta plated as PH here but the best is a H reg VOLVO

Going back about 12 years there was an old style lada riva plated down here PH.

Was constantly being refused by customers who wouldn't be seen dead in it.

they had the same here, but only one, knocked back nearly every time, but weekends no one cared

Reminds me of a few years ago, re Lada Taxi

4 blokes, all serving police officers,[ I know that cos they told the driver] got in the Lada taxi and was going out of town to another city via dual carriage way
they asked the driver, wot will it do then [speed], oh over a ton said the driver, let try it said one of the passengers

so the driver got the Lada going over the ton

3 days later the driver got a knock on the door from the Police traffic department, he was cautioned

I've just order a 306sw which is smaller than my current laguna. I think the 306sw is a bit too small for a taxi but there's different dynamics at play in rural areas.

when i worked in a city and urban area there was very little dead milage so if you car only did 30 to the gallon it was not such a big deal. City fares also tend to be higher.

In the rural area fares tend to be lower and you have a lot more dead milage so fuel economy of your car is the primary consideration when buying.

it's not uncommon to have to run 5 - 10 miles to do a minimum fare of £2.50 that's a round trip of 10-20 miles. You can not do that if you're only getting 30 to the gallon.

You don't get many buses in rural villages once the sun goes down and taxi are the lifeline for many people especially older people. If councils require big cars with lower economy then a lot of people won't get a taxi.
