Hackney Drivers? Hackney vehicles? Private Hire operators? Private Hire drivers? Private Hire vehicles? 1847 act. Section 42 Licences to be registered Every licence shall be made out by the clerk of the commissioners, and duly entered in a book to be provided by him for that purpose; and in such book shall be contained columns or places for entries to be made of every offence committed by any proprietor or driver or person attending such carriage; and any person may at any reasonable time inspect such book, without fee or reward. .................................................... 1976 act 51 Licensing of drivers of private hire vehicles (1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act, a district council shall, on the receipt of an application from any person for the grant to that person of a licence to drive private hire vehicles, grant to that person a driver's licence: Provided that a district council shall not grant a licence— (a) unless they are satisfied that the applicant is a fit and proper person to hold a driver's licence; or [(b) to any person who has not for at least twelve months been authorised to drive a motor car, or is not at the date of the application for a driver's licence so authorised]. (1B) For the purposes of subsection (1) of this section a person is authorised to drive a motor car if— (a) he holds a licence granted under Part III of the Road Traffic Act 1988 (not being a provisional licence) authorising him to drive a motor car, or (b) he is authorised by virtue of section 99A(1) [or section 109(1)] of that Act to drive in Great Britain a motor car.] (2) A district council may attach to the grant of a licence under this section such conditions as they may consider reasonably necessary. (3) It shall be the duty of a council by which licences are granted in pursuance of this section to enter, in a register maintained by the council for the purpose, the following particulars of each such licence, namely— (a) the name of the person to whom it is granted; (b) the date on which and the period for which it is granted; and (c) if the licence has a serial number, that number, "and to keep the register available at its principal offices for inspection by members of the public during office hours free of charge". ......................................................................... Only a crap council would put any details of anyone involved in this trade on the net.
They don't need too, they are just trying to be clever c****.
But to answer Tom's question, you are entitled to see at any council a register of all HC vehicle owners, and any offences committed by the owner or driver of that vehicle. Also a list of PH driver's is also available for inspection, or should be. Both of the above should be available during office hours FOC.

There is nothing in the 1976 act that states a register of private hire operator's must be kept and made available to the public. Regards JD |

I finally got my copy of the 1976 act out of the draw and it is a crappy document isn't it. As I read it the act only refers to a register of Private Hire Drivers. Can't see it mentions Hackney vehicles, hackney drivers or Private hire vehicles anywhere in relation to a register. |

The 1847 Act relates to the taxi plate holders register. It's on here somewhere, or I can e-mail you a copy.
