Taxi fares to rise by 30 per cent on Sundays TAXI users will continue to pay the cheapest fares in the country - except on a Sunday. Hartlepool is famed for having the lowest taxi prices in the country but, under new plans, prices are set to rise by 30 per cent on Sundays. Plans have been approved by Hartlepool Borough Council's licensing committee to dispose of the 9am to 6pm daytime tariff on Sundays and charge taxi users the evening tariff all day. The committee reviews the taxi tariffs every year and under the new price plan a journey of two miles will be 80p more expensive. Current tariffs in Hartlepool are the lowest in the country according to figures produced in Private Hire and Taxi Monthly. But Sunday fares in the town will no longer be the cheapest nationwide - and will not even be the cheapest on Teesside with Sunday taxi customers in Stockton cashing in with a 35p cheaper fare for a two-mile journey. The head of public protection and housing at the council, Ralph Harrison, said: "Any decision must strike a balance between value for money expected by the travelling public and a fair and reasonable return for the taxi proprietors. "Given that the current tariffs in Hartlepool are generally low, and as the proposed change affects Sundays only, the increase would appear reasonable." The proposed price hike received the unanimous support of the Hackney Carriage/Private Hire Vehicle Owners Group at their annual general meeting earlier this month. Fares will stay the same between Mondays and Saturdays when a two-mile journey between 9am and 6pm costs £2.60. |

Famed is not the word that comes to my mind. Laughed at, pitied, commiserated with, sympathized with, figures of fun and derided, are just a few that do come to mind.

I smell a scam comming on, in the 70s I was a Tand G shop sreward in a dye house, the lads wanted a raise and a full time official was brought in. he successfylly argued for more money for long pieces with the same prices for short ones! here it starts with more for sundays then it will be the same tarrif the rest of the week! come on lads best of luck!
