Some time ago GMB informed us of the help his union gave in securing the licenses of two Checkercar drivers. Oddly enough while I was researching something else I came across the hearing. Here it is. _________________________________ Morning Star August 19, 2005 GMB legal win boosts membership at Stansted taxi firm; General union GMB revealed yesterday how a legal victory for two taxi drivers led to a boost in membership and forced bosses to sign a crucial recognition agreement. The union recently stuck up for two of its members working for Checkercar taxis, which works out of Stansted airport, saving their driving licences and, therefore, their livelihoods. The GMB-appointed barrister from Thompson Solicitors argued and proved hardship for the two members, as well as proving that the circumstances surrounding the members' cases were extenuating. A third driver, who was not represented by GMB, lost his licence. This victory encouraged 30 extra Checkercar workers to join GMB and tip the balance for bosses to sign Wednesday's recognition agreement. GMB representative Terry Flanagan said: "GMB is delighted to have helped to save the licences of these hard-working drivers. It has ensured that passengers coming out of Stansted Airport will continue to be supplied with taxis and drivers who are well looked after by their employers and ably assisted by GMB." With the new agreement, GMB will have the power to negotiate terms for holiday entitlement, sick pay and maternity/paternity leave. __________________________________________ |

regards CC I don't even know where this took place. I'm sure he will tell us later today when the technical hitch gets sorted out. By the way I may use that article you wrote on driver security for TT march edition, do you have a recent photo I can use with the article? I promise not to stick pins in it? I think our readers would be most encouraged to see the acceptable face of the NTA appearing in our magazine. lol Regards JD |

I wasn't aware of that. I might take a few extracts just to show the unity of the Taxi trade. I see phm feb issue is out and I think they also highlighted the problem. They also said the Liverpool airport saga has been resolved in favour of a Barrier system. It looks like somone heeded our advice? One pound a go. I'm surprised Mr T never mentioned that or Streetcars? Regards JD |
