Nuff said. This is what they wanted to charge.

The council originally recommended rises at last Wednesday's taxi meeting, including:

• Combined private hire and Hackney licence renewal - up 46 per cent (£84 to £124)

• separate private hire and Hackney licence renewal - up 41 per cent (£72 to £102)

• New private hire and Hackney driver licence - up 30 per cent (£100 to £130)

• Criminal record check - up 25 per cent (£40 to £50)

• Medical - up 25 per cent (£40 to £50)

A retest charge for vehicles which fail MK Council's test is being re-introduced after a three-year absence. It used to be £17.50. Now it is £74.

Oh well, at least it will keep the numbers down.

Quite cheap actually,to start your own business.

what do they mean criminal reccord check up?

surely this is done with CRB?

If this only applied to new start ups, then you may have a point.

But these prices apply every year.

Those prices are extremely low compaired to some.

£124 for a drivers license. I dont think so.
Councils can only cover the costs of producing drivers licenses.
Dont tell me that putting a picture on a bit of card and printing out a couple of pages of A4 costs £124.
No way.

Not to mention the £74 for a restest?

Whether they are value for money is the issue, not whether they are dearer elsewhere.

If you have a small area, then the small PH/taxi fleet will have to pay over the top to employ LOs.

However, you have to wonder why many similar sized councils vastly differ in their fees, when they are only meant to balance their costs, not profit out of it.

Me thinks many are getting away with wrong doings.

councils can only charge for the cost of the SERVICE, this means running the office and enforcement.

I'm not sure what you are saying Mr Wharf.

Councils, in respect of drivers licenses, can only cover the costs of processing those licenses.

Which is why they don't have to advertise any variation in the fees charged, cos they can only cover processing costs of those licenses.

As opposed to vehicle and operator licenses, which they can charge what they like, as long as they can show the money is spent on the trade.

Section 53 (2)
(2) Notwithstanding the provisions of the Act of 1847, a district council may demand and recover for the grant to any person of a licence to drive a hackney carriage, or a private hire vehicle, as the case may be, such a fee as they consider reasonable with a view to recovering the costs of issue and administration and may remit the whole or part of the fee in respect of a private hire vehicle in any case in which they think it appropriate to do so.

The important bit is 'such a fee as they consider reasonable with a view to recovering the costs of issue and administration'.
