Well acording to the rumour mill york hackneys will have to be black, and will not be allowed on if over 4 years old and will not be retested when they reach 8, this was decided by a panel of 3 councillors with 2 voting for and 1 against, the meetong was chaired by a tory, councillor who had not chaired a meeting for 30 years, that was his opening statement, it is beyond belief that 2 people can change the effect that this will have on everyones life, who is connected with the taxi trade in york.

there are now some worried drivers out there who believe that this is too short notice

some have just taken out finance over the next 5 years, some have 3 years finance yet to pay off

some have not got two pennies to rub together, can't get credit or a bank account, so there out of a job

one or two are millionaires, so thats no problem to them

quite a few are considering going back to PH, wheres there's less sh*t and maybe better money

the taxi rents will go up, no doub't about that

I dread to think what the PH lads are thinking, well those who have just purchased on finance "black" vehicles, so they are going to kick off.

i see the new sign posts have been errected on the taxi rank, ready to turn the taxi rank at 2200hrs in a private car park for the hotel

i'm led to believe it was put over one of the local radio stations, the LO spoke, re all cabs black

that from figures held by the council some 5 million tourists came to the city last year, so cab drivers arn't doing so bad and need to give a good impression

does he really think that, that we just ferry tourists about, we all know what its like to sit it out o the ranks, how many are tourists we take, very few, count em on yer fingers over the week

these people are dreaming in the Council, same as the bloke i took home the other day, he thought we must take on average a 100 people a day home in the taxi

No they are the ones who rent the plate and have to provide their own vehicle, when they are paying more than £200 a week to rent the plate and then run the car it is unlikely that they will be able to afford a 4 year old car.

A situation exists in York whereby certain people own more than one plate but do not drive they rent out the plates and this has annoyed the council so they have come up with this method to try and stop this practice.

Thanks for that Mr thinker, I see what Pete was getting at now.

How much is the plate rental then?

I would imagine that if significantly newer cars have to be used then rental values may soften a bit.

And I can't really see how the council's idea would stop the practice.

But councils do know best.

As I said in my previous post, people are paying £200 a week to rent the plate and then they have to provide and run their own vehicle, this will probably be unaffordable,if they have to get finance to buy a newer more costly vehicle, as most of these rented plates are on older cars of under £2000 in value, so the plate will be returned to the the owner who will have to provide a car and then rent that out to two drivers, which will still give work to people but will not give a plate renter the flexibility of having control 24/7

Mr Thinker could you do me a massive favour and tell all those lads renting to have a read of this ombudsman judgement, and then to stop paying.

no that loophole has been stopped by the council, the plate renter rents the plate, the renter gets a vehicle then hands over the vehicle docs to the owner of the plate and registers the vehicle in his name

it all came about after the Hull incident/case
