Taxi Driver Online

Is there any law that says taxi drivers are not allowed to accept a fare for an unaccompanied child under the age of 12?

We have been approached by a parent that wants us to take her 8 year old to school unaccompanied.

While I am willing to take the booking some of our members are reluctant to do it.

Any ideas? Thanks

There is no law that says you cannot carry a child of eight but I suspect it might be reasonable for any driver to refuse to carry the child unnacompanied by an adult. For obvious reasons.

I thought that we were crb checked and badged so that we could carry children unacompanied. It happens all the time with school contracts.

Being crb checked and badged does not stop someone making false allegations. Being crb checked and badged does not say you have to take full responsibility for an unaccompanied minor.

The decision to carry an unaccompanied minor is up to each individual driver to make but if something unforseen happens that is beyond your control then the responsibility will start and end with you. Simply because you are the adult.

I would think there is a bigger risk of false alligations from the drunk women on a Saturday night than from school children and parents.

Being CRB checked didn't stop a swansea cab driver from raping a 15 year old school girl.

Any parent placing their child in the hands of someone they don't know, in my opinion is taking a risk regardless of CRB checks.

However the point raised is about whether or not there is a law which restricts taxi drivers from carrying unaccompanied children and the answer is no.

Get the parents to strap her in, and let her unstrap at the other end.

As long as she is always sitting in the back and never takes her seat-belt off, you should be fine.

I think I have under twelves in the car, on their own, more days than not.

I was always under the impression that you only had a duty of care for any passenger regardless of age and you were not regarded as being "in loco parentis" for passengers under 16.
