is this allowed? Our LA tell us that they cant refuse any one an operators license if they are fit and proper. Im sure this cant be right driving a taxi is one thing and running a business is another, there must be other requirements surely? In the last two months we've had 3 new firms open, rumour is theres more to come and theyre all running from home! As an operator are we not required to have commercial premises at least? Would be grateful if any one could help with this issue we have taken it up with the council but they have their own ideas and same lame excuses like always. Its doing their revenue good but our profits are tumbling. The council are even struggling to maintain standards, unlicensed drivers, drivers doing school contracts on escort badges (no taxi license), drivers without insurance, illeagally plying for hire you name it, it all happens yet no ones been convicted. Is a strike or mass protest the way forward? Or can we squeeze their marbles through a good legal fight to kerb this problem? If were not careful with all these cowboy operators cropping up, and cowboys they are, this place will be the wild wild west...lawless! |

I run my business from home without any problems from the council. When I first started out I had a visit from the council to check how I proposed to operate, at that time I only had stretched limousines. My office was part of my livimg room and I had a drive big enough to accomodate 3 limousines. The council official told me that I could operate 2 limousines from home without planning consent. Because I didn't have a dedicated office and customers did not come to the house to make bookings I was not required to pay business rates for the house. However once I got up to 3 limousines the council insisted that I found premises for the extra vehicle and they even assisted me in finding premises. |

The regulations for operators are laid out in the 1976 act. You will find all your answers there. Regards JD |

The acts don't say so, but most councils have stipulations that ops must have planning permission to run a taxi/PH radio firm. But mine doesn't, and neither does any of my adjoining areas.

Operators can only flourish if they have the drivers to flourish for them. And drivers will only earn out of decent firms, cos if they don't earn they leave to join the likes of you. So look after your existing punters, look after your existing drivers and everything will be just ticker-tee-boo.

We run our business from home without problems ... The only thing we had to have for our operators licence is a letter from our local planning officer as you need planning permission for anything over 2 vehicles ... |

Being issued with an operator's licence from licensing departments is one thing. if I were you I would check with the planning department to see if planning permission was required

i run from home had 2 cars just one now no probs just use phone divert and mobile and hack off streets and rank. Only pain is local bookings late saturday night. During week quiet as local ph has supermarket freephones. Only claim phone bills on tax not house electric etc avoids business rates |
