Hi Trigot
there are a number of various systems on the market ranging from a few hunderd pounds to unit that can cost thousands of pounds.

It all depends on what your looking for and what you want it to do.

Something like the HP PDA with Tom Tom navigator on it works well enough and can easily be removed from the car, you can also get some other less exspensive units as well.

The VDO systems which you mention are very good but require proper fitting to the vehicle including the pulse connection from the car. The unit also comes with a CD Rom for the mapping side of things.

You mentioned Birmingham taxis in another thread, yep over 500 Birmingham taxis use the VDO system and I would say that the vast majority of them are pleased with the system, but still would be interested in whos saying that they supplied the taxis with the VDO units.

Other things that might interest people is that some companies who produce data systems are now starting to include whats called "Turn by Turn" mapping software in the data units. The ones in Birmingham are used by Birmingham TOA and it forms part of their data system.

I know that various data companies will have this option out soon (or have it out now).

Anyway, get yourself a copy of Private Hire monthly or better still try and visit the Private Hire and Taxi show at Sandown next month, there should be suppliers of PDAs etc at the show.

If you have any other questions then dont be afraid to ask.

regards
