We tried them here for two years but the service ws diabolical. The concept for the independent operator was good and it worked initially but the service fell away. All of the 'Railway Children gave up on them but the service providers are trying to entice us back - Any feedback?

same experience. The brick was not really practical, it needed better handsets.

I was visiting my remote ariel site on Firday because there was a power supply problem and found not only Vodafone and Orange engineers there but also Dolphin. I thought they had gone bust until that point and now you mention them.

We run a small companyof 3 taxis in West berkshire. We have 7 dolphin phones, that will be useless at the end of july 04. Is there another company who supply and operate a simular system ? Or a budding electronics expert who can convert the dolphine phones to walki-talki?

Hi
The phones cannot be converted but you do have various alternatives.

1. Two way radio. Restriction on coverage dependant on where you can install the base station. If you have a place which is high enough up then tests could be carried out to see if it would cover your working area. This system could use whats known as an "RFW" this is a way that you can talk from your office to the cars basically using the remote radio as a repeater station. A system could be setup using reconditioned radio equipment which would certainly keep your costs down.

Good points: You know who much it will cost each year for licence and also your site rental

Bad Points: Limited coverage compared to your Dolphin system
No car <> car communications unless something like a
a "Talkthro" system is applied for and with your company
being so small you might just get it. THis would allow drivers
to talk to each other, so you can put your main number on
divert and the drivers can easily communicate with out the
cost of phone calls.

2. Mobile phones - expspensive option, no matter what plan you are on the charges soon mount up. but good coverage.

3. Community repeater. This is a radio system which you share with someone else (may 4 or 5 other companies. You have a unique tone in the radios which means that you will only hear your drivers.
good points: usually good coverage. Less exspence on equipment
fixed montly cost for renting radios and airtime
bad points: when others are using the system you cant use it. usually for a few minutes.

Thats about it really, not much else for you at all. If you want anymore advice then send me a pm.

regards RadioMan

I am just a bloke trying to earn a living out of running a taxi company, and finding it hard.

Everytime that dolphin system closed it caused me great hardship, kept cutting off.

Everywhere I go all I see is us getting ripped off.

Will register onto the board after my son has come around and sorted my e-mail. It seems you can not become a member without an e-mail, which makes sense.

Providing of course you do not frightern me off in the meantime, it is nice to have people to chat to, with common views and similar experiences to share. Not that I like to see other people suffer you understand it is just nice to know I am not the only victim.
