so a lot of the pre-testing is trial and error to find the best set-up.

Sadly not enough of us are doing the above!

Maybe because it's going to fail within the Taxi world in the not so distant future.

We've only done 1 new year on PDAs but neither BT nor Orange let us down over the expected bad period. Maybe it helps having the PDA set to GSM instead of AUTO, but then again you need to be a genious or a hacker to alter any PDA done by Mercury. I'll not say which I am, but I'm not all that clever!
I have had the 'privalage' of running with dataheads. It's fantastic having to wait until you're out of that dip to clear your screen and get another job (NOT)
PDA anytime for me, even with the odd problem.

A few months ago i was on here complaining about our CORDIC system going down constantly - it wasnt the fault of CORDIC, but ORANGE. What a nightmare - it got worse, to the point Orange could never tell us when the mast/service would be up and working again.

After negotiating with BT, we now use their SIM's and PDA's from HTC. It would seem that some of the older HTC Jade models we're not very good with the GPS, dropping signal constantly, however despite asking Orange to replace these handsets (they gave us 5 additional different ones which worked a little better, but not constantly.) they would not replace the 20 handsets we had only had from them less than 1 year on a 5 yr contract.

It was clear that the equipment wasnt suited to the job. The network wasn't up to the job. We junked the contract. Less than 1 year in, and are waiting to go to court over it - they want in excess of £30k but they will not be getting it.

We have now been using BT for the past few months and not one single hiccup. Our CORDIC system monitors the network for us and even when a mast appears to have problems, it is for seconds before a backup system kicks in. The system works flawlessly. We are now looking forward to this Christmas, instead of dreading it with Orange.

BT are more expensive in our case, it works out about £100 per month more, but the service is definately worth it.....

The CORDIC system does not handle the Tmobile/Orange roaming agreement - when the PDA roams to TMobile (excellent for voice calls) the CORDIC system is unable to re-connect. We had to get rid of our Orange SIMS (100) and replace them with Voda/02. I think their software cannot handle the APN switch. Just for fun ask Fash to get Orange roaming data working properly for you and report back his response!! He'll blame Orange because nothing could possibly br wrong with the CORDIC Software :)
