I am interested in this:

If you were starting a new radio circuit from scratch which way would you go?

Would you go for a voice/PMR system.

or

Would you go for one of the new generation PDA/GPRS based systems.

What do you see the benefits of each being? And what do you think would be right for a new company?

If I were up and running and had 50+ cars I'd got for Auriga+voice tied in so I can keep in touch with the drivers, also I'd have the full GPS and call back option. The PDA things are ok but they still have some teething problems like crashing.

The benifits of having Auriga is the back up,I know you have to pay for it but there's an old saying, you only get what you pay for, if you spend £10,000 on a dispatch system your only going to get £10,000 worth of good out of it. Les Ashmore at CLUB cars in Chesterfield swears by Auriga.

Hi
Radio license are easy enough to get. The problem you will have is finding the radio site that will give you the best coverage. If you want to work the City then Guys Hospital is very good, if you want out past Wandsworth then you looking at New Covent Garden or further out to Brentford.

The sites will cost you approx £2000.00 per year for rental then you have to look at other costs like BT line rental to the remote radio site etc etc.

If you only want to use your local office then you have to make sure that your antenna system is upto it, not just some old so alled "low loss" coax that most people use, but some really decent (exspensive) cable which could easily give you a few more miles coverage. The thing to remember is that with every 100ft of the so called "low loss" coax, if a drivers signal hitting the antenna is 10 then by the time it gets to the radio in the control room it will be 5, the same when going out, if you put 10watts in then out of the other end you will get 5.

Also the cars antenna has to be good, not some cheap mini-mag but a decent type antenna.

regards
RadioMan

Surely you don't expect anyone in London to pay a few extra pence for the real mccoy?

You and I know you can count on fingers of one hand those who will do that.

If its anything like around here, pick a busy circuit, start handing out your mobile number to the good punters, telling them you'll give them a little discount, tell a few of your mates, who'll do the same thing, start bad mouthing the radio circuit...creating unstability....then start your own when youve goosed it.
