I'm thinking about purchasing some form of Sat Nav, I've been looking at the tom tom range and the latest model seems to be the dogs boll***s. I've also wanted a speed camera detector as well. Does anybody know if you can incorporate both within the sat nav system? I'm pretty sure you can, and would like some advise from people that have got such systems.....how much am i looking at?.....any good on line reatilers?-cheap!!.....any brands i should avoid?

Any help appreciated.

the Tom Tom GO seems to be the best package around at the moment for the money. you can download monthly updates of all the speed cameras in the UK as well. (not that you need it of course as you always drive within the limits  )

i'll be getting one for myslef too. handy for finding those house numbers on dark rainy nights, they can get you within 30M of a numbered house i hear.

i read somewhere that there is an updated verison 5 of the software due out in May, so i'll hang on a couple more weeks and read some reviews when it comes out.

i've been looking into everything that is available and have come to the conclusion that it would be a lot cheaper to buy a hand held computer(pda) and load the sat nav(tom tom) and speed camera info onto it. just one quick search on ebay has loads for sale with both sets of software either with it or pre loaded onto pda. Anybody else had problems with pda's that should put me off?

that is another way to do it of course, but then the serious head scratching starts with which PDA do you buy, especially if you want to use it as a computer as well and not just sat nav.

Well I am about to put Smart Nav in my fleet.

Was sceptical at first but seems to work like the monkey's nuts.

Did I read somewhere that in the Road Safety Act (that got put off till after the election), it had a clause banning these speed detectors? :?

what they are going to be banning is the radar detectors, they seem to think it perverting the course of justice to have one. and the laser jammers are already illgeal to use.

however GPS systems like Tom Tom and road angel (without the radar head) only tell you when you approching a fixed camera. theres no way for a GPS system to warn you about a "safety van" or a copper around the next corner with a radar gun.

here a copy of a press release from the DOT:

Wording from the DOT.

Thank you for your email about speed camera detectors.

Excessive or inappropriate speed is a factor in many road accidents. Analysis of casualty statistics in Great Britain has shown excessive speed to be a contributory factor in 28% of all collisions that result in a fatality. It is essential for the safety of all road users that the police can undertake speed enforcement to identify people who speed, in particular in covert operations.

It is for this reason that we propose to prohibit devices that prevent or interfere with this police activity. Clause 17 of the Road Safety Bill gives the Secretary of State the power to prohibit the fitting of, or the use of vehicles carrying, speed assessment equipment detection devices. It defines such devices as a device one or more of whose purposes is to interfere with or detect the operation of equipment used to assess the speed of motor vehicles.

The precise details of which devices would be prohibited will be set out in supplementary secondary legislation. This will be done following full consultation with interested people. It is not intended to prohibit Global Positioning Systems which usefully give drivers information on the location of published camera sites.

In the bill, that because of the election didn't become an act, they out-law

Speed assessment equipment detection devices.

'speed assessment equipment detection device' means a device the purpose, or one of the purposes, of which is to detect, or interfere with the operation of, equipment used to assess the speed of motor vehicles.
