Ah, but, if you are a hack on a system, the back of the rank can be nearer the job than the front of the rank. Hence the need for zones rather than straight geo locate & code.

It happened in our borough where one company had zones and another didn't. The company with zones would give the job to the first car, the company without would frequently give the job to the last car.

I need to understand what and how zones are/work. I thought they were drawn out areas on a map. I'm still new n only have had PH work/experience so far.

So what are they and how do they work? :-|

Zones are simply areas defined by you. Modern mapping can often automatically identify certain areas but you won't find maps anywhere that outline what you class as town center or your base area so these need to be created. The general idea is that a town or city may be broken down into several areas and each of these are in effect treated as ranks. Thus in town center, you may have three cars waiting and each one will have a rank (turn) that determines which car will get the next job in that area.

The size of these zones depends on how many cars you have and typically this tends to be anywhere between about 20 to 140 in my experience. Make them too large and cars end up travelling too far. Too small and there’s a lot of setting up to do to make things fair for everyone.

There’s some info that explains this quite well on our web site.http://www.datamasteruk.com/page25a.html

Hope that helps.

Bill :)

I have only ever worked with zones with computerised system, drivers are always asking for nearest car to hire gets hire, how does that work with people who have used it, how do you equate dropping cars in to the scheme of things using that system. Does everyone still get a reasonable share of work ? Zones keep it simple to understand and for the software to work out who gets which job, however many years ago when it was voice only and you had to trust the controller was good and fare you seemed to have a less even night you were either lucky and got a good run of hires that fitted together or the opposite and didnt earn much.
