wasnt there something about companies buying up domain names and selling them on at a profit?

For example, if a company has been known as abc taxis and decided they wanted a website, but found a company had already registered the name but would sell it to the highest bidder?

I was pretty sure there was something.

I wanted minicabs.co.uk, the owner wants £10k, good luck with that.

We bought minicabs.in for £17 instead, but custoemrs got confused by the .in so we changed to minicabseccles.co.uk.

Its pointless buying the name and worthless... because a website ranks in Google by good "seo" so you can buy a different name and have good "seo" and be pretty high or even first of Google for your small local town. Just get somebody who knows what there doing.

All they are doing is parking the domain there's no site with it with no real live visitors!

From my experience people will always search the name of the area and taxis when looking for a taxi/PH.

I don't think anyone will just type taxi or minicab.

No one is going to type 'taxi' when they want one, as they will get 10s of 1000s of taxi numbers from every corner of the country.

They will type 'taxi London' or 'taxi Leeds'.

Thus having a domain minicabs.co.uk is pointless IMO.

I know what your saying people will search for taxis Manchester for example but just because you own a name called taxismanchester.co.uk doesnt mean its going to be first on google or even on the first page. Its all down to your website and search engine optimization key words etc and a good mobile site is now the big thing google looks for other wise it could penalize you and how your web page is written with regards to where you service. I employ a SEO specialist for a different business i do and i am second for my local area below yell.com for my local area and dont have a domain name for my area just my business name... and there's a lot of competition going on with around 15 of us trying to get above me!

So it really is all down to your website.. not your domain name! it used to but times have changed and Google constantly change as do other search engines

you are right but there is some value in a name like that, i know a little bit about seo, like i said not £10k, id pay £1k though.
