Had a nightmare with a mandatory update today!
Went through the process then it wouldn’t accept my details, finally, after another 20 mins I managed to get it working, only to find my account balance had disappeared and along with it all my recent activity required for my accounts!
Called customer services and as you can imagine, they were snowed under. Left a message and they did call me back an hour or so later. For some reason when logging into my account google had automatically used an old email address no longer in use, that in turn meant I’d actually created a new account!
Once they realised what had happened they cancelled the new account and restored the old one. As a good will gesture (for something that was my fault) they have given me £1000 free transactions.

I think that is great customer service.

Shame that’s quite unique for this trade.

My update was a bit smoother, but still a bit fiddly and one of these processes that just doesn't seem to go as per the instructions and guidance provided, and feels like you're in the dark and in the lap of the gods, and you just have to hope it'll all work out in the end [-o<

Fortunately it did...

Final hurdle was a bit of trouble re-pairing my phone with the reader, but got there in the end.

But there was also a notification saying that Android 13 will be required for tap-to-pay transactions from the end of the month. I'll be on Android 12 for the forseeable future, so good job I don't use tap-to-pay. But it was always good to have the option available :?

Interesting, I use it 99% of the time.

Yep, that’s what happened to me. It was a fluke that google used an old email address (through Face ID ) that caused me to set up a duplicate account. A similar thing happened to another driver and he used the chat option to solve it.

cant get on to app to use chat
trying to go through the application process from scratch
every time I try to upload my id getting different errors for different things
think I will just give up until they bring out a new update which hopefully fixes it
I would imagine its costing them a fortune i lost transactions
nothing speeds up a solution like losing their revenue hand over fist

I've updated my iZettle loads of times, but have never had to fanny around like that.

What was so special about that update? Or was it a bug?

Don't know, Sussex, but it was certainly more of an event than the normal app or card reader updates, although that's something I normally try to pay as little attention as possible to 8-[

In fact, I think it's usually the *card reader* software that needs an update, as opposed to the app itself. I've done both my PayPal/Zettle and Lopay reader updates a few times now, and I thought the Lopay process was the better one, because I've used the Zettle reader and it's said I'd need an update to keep using it (thus no warning), whereas with Lopay it's tended to provide a few days notice to update before it's necessary to take payments.

But a rather urgent-sounding email arrived on Monday (which is odd in itself for an app update) saying a mandatory app update was required, and would be available from 3am on the Wednesday. This is part of the email:

Advance notice: Mandatory app update

Hi Stuart,

At Lopay, the security of your account and transactions is our top priority. To ensure this, a mandatory app update will be required after 03:00 GMT, Wednesday 14th January.

The update only takes a moment but please allow some time to complete it before you need to take a payment.

Here’s what you’ll need to do on Wednesday:

When I woke up on the Wednesday there was another email reminding me that the mandatory update needed to be done, and that the app software was by this time available.

And although mine didn't really go precisely as per the guidance provided in the email, it got there in the end, and I obviously haven't been having the issues that others have been having.

Except the new message saying that from the beginning of next month I wouldn't be able to use tap-to-pay because I needed the newer version of Android ](*,)

Which in fact I may be able to update on my phone. But because it's an Xiaomi/Redmi phone it uses a version of Android called MIUI, so it's all a bit murky in terms of updates etc. I'm on MIUI 13, but can update to MIUI 14. Which I think means I'm on Android 12 (so soon won't be able to use the Lopay tap-to-pay), but if I update to MIUI 14 I think that means I'm on Android 13, so could continue to use the Lopay tap-to-pay. Which I've never used anyway :-s

Apart from that, it's all quite straightforward #-o

Of course, in terms of corporate spin and PR spiel, that could be a way of saying there's an urgent security issue or similar that needs patching.

Echoes of the 'safety is paramount' stuff we often hear from councils and the like when the brown stuff hits the extractor fan and they're trying to make it sound like they're riding to the rescue rather than clearing up a mess of their own making :-o

Not that I'm cynical or anything 8-[
