If the battery in the pda is below a certain level the pda starts closing down services plus the cradle has a "known" fault that loses the gps signal when the car is started even when wired direct from the battery

WE use mercury xda's, the drivers are always moaning that they have dropped on the plot, I think it's because they start up thier motors and get thrown off plot. However, my in car charger is wired direct to the battery with in line fuse holders and I have never had a problem with mine.

It may be down to how low the voltage drops on your battery when you turn the starter motor.

Cured it! :D by getting a mobile bluetooth gps reciever, paired it with the pda bypassed the cradle and the pda keeps the gps! At last! Now my driver can't hide when there is work about!

Used to have loads of problems with drivers hiding their gps recievers in crisp packets etc to cheat the sysrem but now i av got the system configured to no gps or poor gps they can not log on has worked wonders for us yes if their is a genuine fault with the equipment then its a bugger but most the while it works very well surprising how many drivers gps is fine now compared to 8 months ago when they kept coming up accquiring & they wer logging onto any zone & not being traceable

The chunky Mercury cradles are an abomination. If you can, try to upgrade to newer PDAs with integrated GPS.
