Is that the software provider or the network provider? I can understand companies like O2 needing to cover the cost of providing the “free” PDA hardware by means of a tied contract but to my way of thinking there’s no justification for a binding contract with a software provider. It’s always difficult to respond on topics like this without seeming to be trying to push our stuff but. Our approach is that if any company’s not happy with what we provide and think they can get better elsewhere then they’re free to go without any notice. Course that puts the onus on us to do our job right and make sure we keep our customers happy because these days we rely mainly on continued customer support for our existence. Perhaps when it comes time to renew your contract your managers might think twice about entering into such deals again. Bill

i know someone in Hatfield who got rid of the mercury system a couple of years back they installed cordic but had to carry on paying for the PDA's to o2. Surely your mobile contract aint with Mercury, and your hardware must be fairly new so why dont you just get some new software installed and carry on using the pda's with the new system? |

It's a multitude of things mate, PDA's going down trying to connect to the Orange network, software crashing and locking up all the machines in the office, can't restart the system etc etc. We've been royally bent over with this system. The base ops have to give the work out manually because the system won't recognise the closest car, it will pull you from one end of the district to the other. |

Changing software supplier shouldn’t involve having to change networks given they all work on the same principle. In Nige’s case, it may well be that PDA’s haven’t come directly from Orange in which case he might be locked into some sort of third party contract. Most companies with a contract directly with Orange will be paying between £2.50 and £3.50 a week per vehicle depending on the length of contract and the type of PDA being used. If the bills are more than this and aren’t being paid directly to Orange then there’s a strong possibility you’re tied to the software supplier.
