There are a few companies that now have Sim cards in the data units with others having add on modules for sim cards. As for resorting to GPRS when outside of radio range, well you still have to pay for the GPRS and before anyone goes down this route they should really consider if GPRS is required. Remember if you sign up for a GPRS contract, if you dont use it you still pay for it.

But you dont actually need to sign up for a gprs contract always. If your useage of GPRS is low, you can have it as an add on to a voice subscription where you only pay on an as used basis. We have O2 XDAs doing this right now, on a straightforward voice tariff.
