I'm looking at buying an in-car CCTV system and was excited that they were so cheap on ebay but after watching the demo video i can see why.

Have a look at the mimi video and at 1:30 the car stops dead and the speedo shows 0mph. It then sticks on 0mph for over 30 seconds even though the car is moving at pace! This would be thrown out of court and be no good as evidence at all.

Has anyone actually got one of these because this really concerns me? Even allowing for a lower frame rate etc. that wouldn't explain the incorrect speed for 30 seconds. It looks a pain to take in and out the car too with those weak little suckers.

I'd like to hear from anyone who's actually got one. I've bought things off ebay for over 10 years now and sometimes i've saved a fortune but sometimes i've ended up paying out more than if i'd just bought the expensive one in the first place!

And for any drivers considering this there are similar specced products on eBay for just £150. These also have dual cameras, g-force detector and Google maps overlay. So unless you give TDO readers at least a 60% discount, take your spam and stick it where the sun don't shine.

Yes and no. I'm looking for CCTV and seen one that has all the features mentioned in the OP, but it costs £150. All the adverts (spam) for CCTV posted by companies on this forum are charging at least double that amount for the same or less features. So unless some company comes here and promotes a system for around the same price I'm not interested. And any other members considering CCTV, shop around, there are cheaper products avilable.

Don't know if I'm allowed to post the actual link (don't want to spam!). Just go to ebay and search for 'taxi cctv'. The one I'm looking at is a MiMi DVR unit and costs £149.99 +£7.99 postage. The seller also has a website which I'd prefer to buy from rather than ebay but strangely doesn't sell the DVR on the website. MiMi also has it's own website but does'nt sell direct to the public - search google for 'mimi dvr'. I've only gone as far as looking at ebay for CCTV and had a fleeting look at the unit mentioned, but it seems to do all I want and pretty cheap compared to other systems.

I guess they are one and the same. It doesn't help when the driver puts his music on at the beginning, and from then on it's just noise all the way. It's not the video that I would have used to try and advertise my product!

Two thoughts here: 1. Some punters will be put off, whatever they had planned, by the presence of such a system. 2. If the System's Evidence does not stand up in the Court, it's worth little to nothing

I have the Roadhawk 2 cctv camera system, woudnt work with out it , it protects me from not only from runners or aggresive punters, or other, incliuding aggressive desperate taxi drivers who wish to inflix violence etc etc to their member drivers , it views the full area even when stood on a taxi rank, it sees infront and all all around the cab, I have recently used this video footage via issuing the police with the video in a recent case, the police officer dealing with the case was amazed at the clarety of the filmed footage in the dark of the night inside a cab, the suspects were arrested you would be a fool to buy cheap crap off ebay, do the right thing and buy sonething that works for taxi drivers, it maybe 300 quid but what the hech , you can put this againsts your income tax the unit can easily be detached from your winscreen using the stick on pads, and bracket i opted from using the suckers dont knock this firm they supply decent gear, remermber when they accuse you, what evidence do you have to back up your claim

If the £150 unit works as well as the £500 one then how can it be 'cheap crap off ebay'. I'm not saying it is or isn't, but until someone buys the cheap unit and tries it no-one knows ! I'd love to have CCTV but don't have the funds to part with £300+, on the other hand I could just about go to £150 (if it does the job). All I need is for it to be able to record decent quality audio and video in all lighting conditions inside the car, for it to be easily installed/removed and easy to operate. Anything else, like external camera or GPS logging and mapping is a bonus. Yes the £500 one does all that, but so does the £150 one. The only difference being that the expensive unit has been tried and tested. For arguments sake lets say both units are equal, what would you rather pay £150 or £500 ? The main reason I think for a lot of cabbies not having CCTV is cost, I reckon there is a market for someone to come up with a cheap, reliable system that does as good a job as the more expensive systems currently available. I'd certainly be a potential customer.

There's one on ebay for £15 if you want to go really cheap! It has no GPS but it sits on the dash and records video. I rang up my insurers to ask if i'd get a discount for having CCTV and i was surprised that they told me not to use it and it would increase my premium as it increased the risk of the car being targeted for theft!
