Are there any companies out there who use meters with that are installed in the GPS units? I've been hearing that these meters have been dropping short and charging the customer extra. These meters work off GPRS and IMO aren't a true a accurate reading. |

I’ve just done a back of a fag packet calculation that I think shows the difference between new and worn tyres is going to affect the meter reading by about 3.6% so I’d think the calculated method would be just as accurate if not more so. Course if the GPS jumps you from Hamilton to Airdrie you get a big bonus.

Does GPS take into account hills? Our trackers always show less miles than the odometer. |

Taxi and satnav units just work in 2D not 3D. If you're going up a hill the GPS still registers that you're moving forward, just at a slower speed because it still thinks you're on level ground. And as far as it's concerned you've still travelled the same distance between A + B on the ground because it doesn't know you've travelled via C at a hilltop. |

On the Datax 5 we present a GPS distance and Time. That is used to calculate the fare. We also have a far better way in EU where the road network is fixed and "Off roading is unusual" We send the POB co-ordinate, Waypoints and Clear Co-Ordinate back to base at the end of the job. The base routing engine then sends the correct routed distance and price. It is more acurate than a GPS or pulse meter as tyrewear and wheelslip cannot affect it. It will also always give consistently the same distance. |
