Reason I ask is that one of the companies I work for charges drivers £15 a week to pay for the Cordic system (this company charges commission per job, not a weekly rental/circuit fee, and this PDA charge is compulsory). They give you a HTC P3470.

I've no idea how much it costs, but if that's the actual cost, then fine.

I'm just wondering, if they're making money out of the drivers, if it doesn't cost them £15 a week, especially as that charge has been the same the past 5 years I've been with them.

Are you really wondering? Cos I'm pretty sure of the answer.

I say I'm wondering, in case I'm wrong, and if I am, then I'm wrongly accusing them, and if someone from that company reads this, then it's going to bite me on the bum.

I would like actual figures, though - there are about 100 drivers in the company, if that helps.

It's like a mobile phone contract, if they don't go over their allowance then it doesn't cost them nothing.

I'm sure there are one-off start up costs involved, such as the installation of software and hardware required, which the £15/week subsidises for.

Anyway, I've handed mine back saying I can't afford the £15 weekly (I work part-time for them, and haven't done any jobs for them for the past 3 weeks, so I'm already £45 down  ).

So you've been paying them for something you haven't been getting any work??

I've been busy doing other work, from other companies, which are better paying.

I will get work from them, whenever I log on (well, not anymore since I handed the PDA back), but as their work is most airport based and hanging around waiting for flights to land, it is not a very efficient use of my time.

I'm still on their books, if they contact me to do any work for them, they'll have to send me the job details by text or e-mail.

That £20/day is what you pay as an operator, I assume?

£15 a week is what me as a driver have to pay, and it's a lot if you don't do much work for that company.

I own my own car and rent the PDA

call it £150/week or i can rent a car 24/7 inc PDA/insurance/repairs/tax,etc just pay fuel for £250

its costing me more than the extra £100 a week to run my own car so i will probably go rentacar come september, i have my own school run which will cover the car rent

Isn't that disgraceful.. the operator wants to make money.

Of course, but that's why they charge commission on each job (for the operator I'm questioning).

The PDA fee should be charged at cost for the drivers (which is what I'm trying to find out), or absorbed into the commission, otherwise I just see it as a rental/circuit fee (albeit a small one), thus forcing occassional/part time drivers, to do at least one job for them a week, otherwise their account will go into the red.
