I've used Taxi Call before and I know a few who are still running it. They wouldn't use anything else.

Ha ha.

If Nige's company changed to anther provider, this forum would probably shrivel and die.

The way I see it is that Taxi-Call simply helps Hack drivers to get a bit more work and provides a limited alternative to working for a base but it's only ever going to be as good as it's level of promotion and there's a lot of companies out there all trying to persuade people to use their app!

So then Bill, would you say that there could be (in the near future) a system built by some nerdy kid, using smart/android phones and interwebbything that could do the same as the well known major players for 10% of the cost cos just like music downloads, when an app has been d/loaded five million times at £2 a throw that nerdy kid could be quite a happy nerdy kid

The ways things are developing in the mobile market, you don’t need to be a nerd to glue together an app as the android modules make it all a bit like building with Lego. Net result is rather than just one kid getting 5 million to pay him £2, there are five million kids who’d be lucky if they made £2! So with all these easy taxi apps appearing on the market, your £2 investment might not get you as far as you might have thought.

Look at car insurance, booking a hotel or even takeaway meals. There’s a whole raft of companies out there all with apps and websites for the public to select from and they’re growing by the day so the question is, as a small business, do you subscribe to just one or do you need to go for all? You’ve got no control over which app Joe public chooses to use so it all comes down to marketing and the nerdy kid wont be much help here.

We have an excellent customer app with all the bells and whistles and its supplied free of charge. We’ve done all the nerdy stuff but it’s up to the end user to actively promote its use and to be honest, very few seem to bother.

well forget the app being the be all and end all, there has been job despatch software on the web (base) and mobiles (was PDA) which i was using over 8 years ago, and there were over 3000 owner drivers on it paying £30 a month, so by now the setup fees must have been covered, that was for courier work, basically one huge network

For sure they’d have covered their development costs, made a nice profit but by now this will being chipped away at by all the newcomers and unless the company does something about it it’ll eventually become a former company. It’s called business evolution where every company follows a path of growth followed by eventual decline.

Being first to the market allows companies to sell at good profit margins but only for as long as it takes for others to copy or technological advances make it obsolete. The more apps that come onto the market the more prices tend to stagnate or reduce with those that were out to make a quick kill being the ones most at risk from the newcomers. Again this is all part of a well-defined evolutionary process.

Chasing after a market that’s already established with lots of competition just because it’s easy will almost certainly end in failure. I’ve lost count of the number of people that have approached us this year claiming to have the ultimate mobile app but without infrastructure, support and marketing, they end up going nowhere. When someone comes along with a cerebral implant that detects when some thinks they might need a taxi I might pay a bit more attention to them.
