I am soliciting for ideas for a perfect Driver App. The one that does what it says on the tin, without the bells & whistles.
Basically a very minimalistic "less is more" type. Like an Apple product :)

I am having a difficult time deciding between the Driver and the Vehicle. Who logs on for work?

You can choose either way just as long as you know who's driving what car.
We log on and send work to cars but we could just as easily have written the code to use driver numbers.
I think the small companies like the "personal" feeling of dispatching to drivers but large companies tend not to even know the drivers so car numbers makes a bit more sense.

Bill :)

Bill Thanks. What does your analysis say? I know you tend to cater for big companies. I assume the car would make sense that way. So how do you keep track of which driver is working at that time? I could make it so it auto logout the any drivers logged on the car but i dont want that kinda micro management, i like to trust people lol

Best way is for when a driver logs on, they select a vehicle.

Some drivers may have/or have access to more than one vehicle, so this could be the best way?

Crikey! that was the bset answer ever. When you've been coding for hours on end for months between fares. Even the simplest of ideas doesn't come-up in your head. Thanks very much Chris.

That is how it is for us. A driver can be in an estate car on one day and an MPV the next and an 8 seated after that.

Our Mercury PDA has every driver and every vehicle on the base listed

ive put the wrong car in and not known till the base sent a message

I suppose it all has to be correct, after all the DSS, HMRC and Benefits agency could pop in at anytime and ask to see who does what shifts.......boom!

I've just implemented this thing after that hint from Chris. So far this is how it works:-
The driver logs in as normal. He chooses what times they are available. Then chooses the car they are driving (I'm only displaying cars that are assigned to them. Any of those cars if in use are not selectable. If they notice an anomaly they contact the office. When they select a car all other drivers who are logged on it are automatically logged off and cant get jobs.)

What do you think?

Can the second bit be taken out?

After all the driver isn't going to log in when they're not available.

They will log in when they are available, and when they're no longer available, they log out again.

Sorry I mixed my explanation there. What I meant is this. On the website our drivers choose days and times when they are available for work. We have few drivers and 1 kinda fulltime office staff. When we take jobs we want to know quickly if we can do it. This is not a very fool proof component but its helped free some time by suggesting available times in 25 minute blocks. Some of the drivers are from a regimented former life so they like to know things in advance.

Anyway, it's something for lazy me to use. eusasmiles.zip

I see. That makes sense if you're a small firm.
