Lets post the various questions/discusions/debates in this thread if possible. So, in the long term, what system is cheapest? |

And can someone explain please (forgive my ignorance here) where does GPRS and PMR lie in relation to 3G. I am really confused about these terms as 3G seemed to be the thing to go for a short while ago but now it's hardly ever mentioned and GPRS is the flavour of the month as it were. Are they similar, the same or do they have nothing in common at all? And to confuse things still further I have just read something about 4G.
What's going on?

Beyond me Onzon. As for Sussex's question about cheapest it all depends on how your company works. Mine with 10k a year of remote aerial site costs and still needing 45mobile phones to communicate meant GPRS was a good deal. Bandwith wholesalers offer excellent packages where for £* a month you get a sim for your XDA, another sim for your phone, you get 5MB of data transmission (which seems more than enough) and then you pay an excellent rate for all the calls you make on your mobile. |

And as I have said Sussex with the Auriga CT4000 you would be paying for both. |

Labraiz That's the sixty four thousand pound question! and depending on what you need it could be the answer as well.
You would think that I would know the answer to this but the question of costs seems to be top secret here with nobody being prepaired to give actual costings. We here have a very rough rule of thumb that says if a system is bought outright on a three year lease purchase, it will generally equate to about 90p per day per car irrespective of the quantity. Of course the argument is that a GPRS system can't be compaired with a PMR based system and I do accept that they are two different things both with pros and cons. It really depends on exactly what your looking for and I would never say which is the best solution for a given company without knowing all the facts. That's probably me banned from the forum

![]() Far too simplistic a question to give you a clear answer. However I reckon it would cost you about 57 grand for 200 cars over 3 years for GPRS plus a 200 mobile phones on contract with calls much cheaper than pay as you go. Now if you run off a twig on your roof and only require a 12 miles radius of coverage over flat ground PMR possibly wins hand down. And if you are getting over 3million in circuit fees in that time is 19 grand a year prohibitive? Now how much a week do those 200 drivers spend on mobile phone calls? How many have contracts and how many are pay as you go? |

So, in the long term, what system is cheapest? Hi, Well others have already come back with some things. The chepeast is not always the best solution. You should really sit down and look at what you have and then look at what you want to achieve. Tom Thumb has come up with the costings of his GPRS and his old radio system. Bill has some of the costings as well for his system. Its one of these things we will have to debate/discuse. regards |

Would that be the same with the 2007 (ish) Auriga PDAs? |

Sussex no one can answer that question. We dont know what Auriga are going to do or offer in 2007. Send them and email and ask them. Lets see what they have to offer at Telford. regards |

Impressed Bill ![]() Hi Bill Well you should see the other office with the new 80ft radio mast.....It certainly works very well thats for sure. The new main office will be excellant when completed. Still lots of work to be done. I am working on a dual voice control postion with speakers built into the panes, vol control....desk mics etc. Shoud look nice when completed. Also installing a data unit at the control postion for monitor data channels etc just in case of loss of service. regards |

The Auriga CT4000 is meant to do this. Not sure if it is out there working yet. This solution will mean double costs though. Cos you will pay for PMR and £7.50ish a month for GPRS. |
