After picking up and dropping off my School run clients from the side of a busy main road where other drivers don't seem to give a fig about the safety of school kids I thought it might be a good idea to get an Led Amber Roof bar beacon fitted on top of the people carrier..Would this be legal if it were to be only switched on when Picking up or dropping off pupils or Illegal full stop.

Any Ideas...A led beacon seems like small price to pay for a bit of extra visibility.

Something like the lower image that looks plain when off but flashes amber.

Not 100% sure but I think it would be illegal.

I think there is a list of vehicles that are allowed to use them when on public roads. I.E. breakdown recovery vehicles, plant machinery, slow moving, escort vehicles etc.

Yes, but then I see almost all Council vans and pickups with them fitted that are not on that list, surely no right thinking policeman would nab you for using them in the interest of child safety, I'm not advocating driving with them on like some of those Idiots do, a lot of them drive with them switched on just because they have got them even though they are neither slow moving, wide vehicles nor a hazard in any way.

It's not illegal to use them, you are warning oncoming vehicles of danger.
