While we’re fitting our kit into cars we often end up having to explain to drivers why we cant fit in certain places due to safety considerations. It’s a struggle at times but we normally end up convincing the driver it’s in their best interest but last week I came across one that absolutely took the biscuit. His old radio was mounted against his knees on the steering column. He requested the new radio fitted in the same place despite all other cars in the fleet being conventionally mounted. When the set was removed, we were horrified to find that it was held in place by four two-inch wood screws, screwed directly into the airbag unit.
Having explained how this would almost certainly break both his kneecaps if the air bag ever activated, he remained adamant he wanted it fitting there. Of course we refused to fit it at which point he said, “Put the old one back on then. I’m leaving the company if I can’t have it mounted where I want it!”
After an hour, we ended up with a compromise where we did a conventional install that was documented and signed for however he said the he was going to rip it all out and fit it his way when we had gone. The mind boggles! Bill

This is why I get a deposit of drivers when I give them the radio and won't let them start until I have inspected the fitting/wire's etc.
