Post subject:  cheapest communication options between 2 & 4 vehicles
Hi all,

Im looking for some sort of cheapish way of instant communication between myself and 4 other drivers.

At present i get a phone call from the customer and then ring a driver to issue the job,but according to whos doing what i might have to make 3 or 4 calls to issue the job.

On top of that sometimes the customer wants an instant answer to his/her enquiry i.e wheres my taxi.

Cant have a base station at home due to draconian planning issues with the council so im probably looking at some sort of mobile radio system between the cars as this would be the best option as i also have calls diverted to me when im on the move.

Is there such thing as a long range walkie talkie to cover say approx 5-6 mile distance.

I aint got a clue about radio so dont shoot me down eusasmiles.zip eusasmiles.zip

Hi
You can get yourself some radios and put them on the "UK GENERAL" radio channels.

Copy and past the link above and that will take you to the site for more information.

Downside is that its 5watts output but you can run cars on it with simplex comms which means you can talk to each other directly. You can also fit high gain aerials to your cars so that should help with coverage.

WORD OF WARNING:

The maximum permitted effective radiated power (ERP) of equipment used under this licence is 5 watts

therefore fitting high gain antenna would make the sets illegal.

Take a 5 watt radio & fit a 6db gain antenna on it and you`re now capable of nearly 12 watts ERP.

Suddenly its not so legal!

To obtain 5 watts ERP, with a 6dB gain antenna your radio would need to run at 2 watts.

okay the Rx path might improve but not by a huge amount.

the whole point of UK general is for "localised" comms..<3km ,for "wider area" stuff standard PBR license is preferred.

my local UK general taxi users got tugged by ofcom for running 6db gain antennas on their UK general kit. after i fitted them with unity gain ones!

calculated ERP: 5 watt radios, plus gain of the antenna, nearly 13 watts.

OUCH!
