I know it's been asked before but are these systems any good? We are thinking of getting one. Are there any conflicts with Mercury Mobile?

I'm not really sure what benefits you can gain by bookings via text.

Many times it's hard to understand punters when they talk, let alone when they go into text mode. :?

I suppose if it's busy then punters don't have to wait for a girl to answer the phone, but if it's busy have drivers got time to decipher some little brats text.

I suppose booking cars by text would be a good idea only if it was linked to your booking system & it could convert the text lingo into a booking on its own

We were thinking along the lines of setting up text points in pubs and crowded clubs with loud music and the benifits to deaf and dumb people.

Plus the fact texts are getting more popular now with mobile service providers as a way of attracting consumers

All they have to do at a text point in a club is text "Taxi" and send it to a dedicated number the company recieves the text at the office via a pc screen

It seems a lot of fuss for something that can be done verbally quicker.

What happens when several people text from the same point, and how does each driver know who to pick up?

And how does all this fit in with what most council's require from their operators i.e. name of punter, and destination? :?

I've only found out the basics of it and thought I'd ask on here if anyone had used it at all.

I'll ask the rep about your points tomorrow Sussex

We've been using SMS bookings for quite sometime time now and it works a treat, we get alot of young people using their free texts to book taxis by text and we just send them an sms confirmation all thru our booking system. They send us a text it comes into an inbox on our booking system, we get an alert, convert the text into a booking and send a confirmation.

The best thing is if you get a mobile number thats the same as your local number this way it dont cost them nothing to send you a text and will attract more customers.

if you use a short code number its not really worth it then.

Quite a few of my customers use text bookings and with a generation of kids that have been brought up able to text better than they can speak this is proving quite popular.

I'll be honest, I don't fully understand how it works because I wasn’t involved writing the interface software. I think most people use short codes that the system then translates into what looks like a normal booking so it's just key press to accept. Dodgey text speak just appears as a text message for the operator to sort out.

It's not everyones cup of tea but at least it's there for those that want to use it.

Bill :)
