For those who use TomTom devices and find the built in POI's (places of interest) to be limited,
I came across this little unknown feature which
TomTom and Google Maps apparently released in December 2007.
Google Maps will now give you the option to send business listings to your TomTom device as POI's.
Very useful for adding out of town venues, restaurant's, pubs etc.
Here's How:
Quote:
To Export a business listing you need
TomTom Home version 2 installed on your PC and your TomTom device connected to your PC via the USB cable or docking station.
Point your Web Browser to
Google MapsSelect "
Find Business" at the top of the page.
Type in the
"Where" field a Town or a County where you want listings from.
Type in the
"What" field a business you want to find for example a Hotel name or just type "Hotel" to list all hotels in that area.
Click
"Search Businesses"Google will now display a list matching your search on the left.
Now click on the business listing you want and this will be displayed on the map.
Click on
"Send" in the upper right corner.
A new window appears.
Click
"GPS" and then
"Send"The TomTom Home software will pop-up asking you what to do.
Select
"Add to Favourites"You can then rename the favourite for reference if you wish or leave it as the default name Google uses.
Now on your TomTom device select
"Change Preferences" then
"Manage POIs"Create any category's if needed.
Select
"Add POI" Select a category then import your "Favourites" you added from Google Maps.
Once added to your POI category's you can safely delete the listings from your favourites to free up memory on your device.
Note: At the moment you can only export listings that have alphabetic keys next to the listings.
After you've added POI's I suggest you use the free utility
POIEdit to delete duplicates, rename, sort and edit your custom POI's.
