hi we are looking at moving to gprs, now whats the law on this as there is much chat about your drivers maybe fined and get points. whats the good and bad points. we are looking at autocab, auriga and cordic. any feed back plz.

I have no knowledge of any legal issues regarding using a PDA as long as it is in a cradle.

Cordic is what we use and it is superb. The support is good and it is excellent value.

Autocab... not very familiar with the product these days but seem to be selling a few systems.Folks I know who use it changed from Auriga and all describe it as 'solid, dependable but not spectacular'.

Auriga.... We used the old system, I like the people but the evocab system has bad press from users I know. And I know of at least four companies who took it out and put Autocab or Cordic in.

I know a firm in Edinburgh that switched to PDA's has had problems with their drivers being stopped by the police for 'using their mobile phone' whilst driving, and also understand that Cordic are currently developing something for them to avoid these problems.

Having read the law regarding this, it seems that using anything outside of the PMR radio frequency range could potentially get you in trouble - but it is not very clear on whether this is cradled or not, and what constitutes using the pda.

As with Tom Thumb, Im aware of a few firms that have moved from Auriga to Autocab and Cordic but have also heard that a number of firms have moved to (and a couple back to) Auriga from Autocab and Mercury.

I've also spoken to a firm who have said they would move away from Cordic, but the cost of breaking their GPRS contract with the mobile phone company makes it impossible!

You should of course be aware of the length and overall cost of the GPRS contracts when considering who to go to, and whether to use GPRS, PMR or a mixture of the two.

We use mercury, the only problem is we are with O2 and we lose the connection at least once a week(normally on a friday night!!).
We are going over to orange when our contract runs out, apparently they are more reliable.
I have found the mercury system easy to use and you can see EXACTLY where the driver is.

We use Autocab, great system.

As you point out the contract has nothing to do with CordicS contract is negotiated seperately with a service provider.

We are with a wholesaler, who sells us space on O2. We extended our agreement to two years, to save us money. We have 52 units since we have done away with our remote aerial and the land line to it, communications have actually got cheaper. But that scenario is solely down to our set up.
