| Post subject: | Radio Scanner - any used or got one? |
Hi The taxi firm I work for uses the conventional 2 - Way Radio (not digital). I know this is just being lazy - but it does get annoying when sometimes you get everything ready to work, get into the car and find out there are 20 drivers who will get a job before you. Subsequently you go back in doors and sulk. Anyway can I purchase Radio Scanner - obviously have it tuned to our frequency and listen to the taxi radio from home? Anyone ever seen this work? If yes can anyone suggest what I may need to buy and possible costs? Thanks |

Technically yes but the act of listening to the transmission is an offence. |

With this being Technically possible - with what equipment? and how? Regarding the legal side of things - I will obviously obtain permission from the taxi company I work for. And am sure they will be fine as that is what I pay them rent for. |

It is only an offense to act on information if unauthorised to do so. |

Depending on the signal strength, a hand held scanner programmed to your company's frequency should be good enough. If the signal is weak, you may need a base ariel and scanner. |

Just listening to radio transmission (including those of the emergency services) certainly isn’t illegal. What is illegal is to use or pass on information to others that may use it to commit any sort of crime. Your options are either get a cheap scanner, take it right near your base and it should lock onto to their transmissions. Once you’ve found the frequency, lock it so you don’t have it scanning for everything else. Alternatively, get a cheap second hand radio off Ebay and get someone to put it on the taxi frequency. You will need a separate antenna if you do this though. |

I take the point with sigan strength etc - but still find it a bit strange more people have not tried or used this kind of device. Especially now with the smoking ban for drivers. Anyway this help is appreciated. |

if its a very old system in use then a scanner works perfect, but why are you in home? when i was radio car we used to sign in and rank up, locally the PH radio cars place themselves around the town, the base op should call for cars nearest to a job "anyone near mecca bingo".....etc. a scanner will probably only serve to wind you up more |

Wrong, see 'offence 1' here: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/radiocomms/ifi/ ... t/guidance If, however, permission is granted from the office then you will be OK - get it in writing. Some taxi associations, offices etc are actually strict on not allowing this, depends on the circumstances. |
