My lad is looking to start out on private hire. Do any of you know which taxi insurance companies would insure him at 22? He's been driving 2 years, but this is his first time on the taxis.
He's aware that it won't be cheap, but he doesn't know which companies to try. Any younger drivers here with advice please?

Most will insure him, but they will charge an arm and a leg (2 legs in some cases  ).

I suggest he shops around a bit.

Start with the insurance links on this page:

I deal with this company, based in Aberdeen, but cover all UK, https://www.hrinsurance.co.uk/motor_vehicle/taxi_public_private_hire.asp and through them Sabre Insurance. They've never been beaten on price, for me, for the last 5 years. Decent cover and excess as well.

You might find it easier if you insure the vehicle yourself and put him on as a named driver

I'm 25, and pay £2,900 (I was 24 when it was taken out) fully comp for mine, so I reckon about £4,000 at 22 sounds about right. :-|

Had a quote a couple of months back for a new badge holder aged 22 - upwards of £7,000. Obtained another quote today from a different company, none of the details have changed - just under £4,000!

Shop around!

I know this is an old thread now, but as it still crops up in search results, someone might benefit from this piece of advice - take care before insuring a taxi in your own name and adding a youngster as a named driver, especially if they are the main driver, not you. Fronting is illegal and can invalidate the whole insurance policy. And that's the good news! At worst, you could find yourselves facing prosecution and a criminal record for insurance fraud/driving without valid insurance.

Fare Cover will give quotes for young taxi drivers - see what they can do for you. http://www.farecover.com.

Who said anything about Fronting ??

I wasn't suggesting anyone would do it deliberately. Fronting happens inadvertently sometimes, simply because many drivers aren't even aware that there's anything wrong in trying to get a cheaper premium for their children this way. Just trying to raise awareness.
