My wife and I have a small company, there is a small part of the private hire car business, can I use my wife's 5 years NCD to insure the car, and let me to be the second driver, the reason is she has 5 years NCD, I only have 2 years, but she does not have private hire car licence, I have, would that be insured? she won't drive, only me. Or we only can buy the cars for company owner? we cannot use our names to buy the cars for business?

Only a licensed PH driver can drive a licensed PH. No license, no drive.

In respect of insurance normally you wont get all your no-claims transferred. Speak to your insurance company.

yep, she won't drive, she just owns the car and buy the insurance under hers name? would that be possible? BTW, for the operator, Who under the PH cars? are their boss or company? any differences?

Yes it is possible, but it's not common for non-driver badge holders to get full no-claims bonus.

Would that not be insurance fronting? If the Policy is in her name she is the main driver, yet she isn't driving the car at all? Only the named driver is?

I don't think it is.
If your teenage son or daughter buys a car it will be almost imposable for them to afford the insurance, so normally the parent takes this out and has the sibling on the policy even though the parent possibly will never drive the vehicle

No.

Many, far too many IMO, hackney carriage owners don't actually have a badge to drive the thing.

Despite my views on the matter, I doubt they have problems getting legal insurance.

think again, theyve tightened all that up, as soon as "new driver" get mentioned they stick a nought on the end regardless, its better now to insure a L driver (cos they are supervised) then up it to qualified with older drivers as 2nd and 3rd named, ive just been thru hell with our lads......

If it's only insured for 'hire and reward'. Am I right in thinking that if the cars insured SDP as well that any named driver can drive it, obviously not when it's working as a PH vehicle though ?

Any named driver can drive it, providing they have a PH license issued by the same council as the vehicle is licensed by.

No license, no drive applies whether the vehicle is working or not. If it has a plate on the back the driver needs a badge.

Of course this does not mean that the plate can be removed so that a driver without a badge can drive.

yep, that make sence, for operators, who owns the cars? the boss? if it is the boss, that means the boss must have PH licence.

A PH operator's licence is needed to take bookings, which are then passed on to the vehicles. Thus there are three tiers of licences - operators, vehicles and drivers.

Some operators run vehicles, some don't - the vehicles are owned by others, often owner/drivers - and some have a mixture.

Aaarghh, I hate all this insurance guff, it's too fecking confusing !!

So what were saying is if I insure a PH vehicle as SDP with additional hire and reward cover and the missus as a named driver she can't drive it because she doesn't have a PH licence ? Even if the vehicle is'nt being used for PH purposes ie. working at that time ? All seems a bit loco to me !

So what happens when I take the car to a garage for repairs and they need to do a test drive but dont have a PH badge ?
