Just renewed the policy on one of my vehicles and got quite a shock the Premium quoted was not too bad slight increase on last year BUT I have a part time driver on the policy and when i sent them a copy of his license i got a shock.I did not know about it until I saw the license but back in March he picked up a 3 point penalty which is fine as his last points were back in 2007 and irrelevant so I did not expect a problem but they insisted on a 25% loading of the premium which added another £300 to the premium Anybody else getting that sort of reaction from insurers ? |

This is the sort of loading I am seeing for CU80 convictions i.e. mobile phone. Also MS90's get stung as well and they are both 3 points like an SP30. Interested to know the conviction code. |

I would bet if it had just been an SP30 it may have been no extra if it was his only conviction. Depends on the insurance co though as they all vary. The big problem we are having is with "undisclosed" claims. For examle if a named driver on a taxi policy had a claim in his own car, even if he wasn't the driver, strictly speaking he should disclose this to the vehicle owner. It really is getting very silly now. |

I wonder if insurers are treating penalty points as a way of bumping up premiums without having to push up basic rates too much. Thats a dangerous game though as it would only take one major player to reenter the market not imposing the penalties and they would clean up |

Points to an insurer say 'risk' - I know about 15 years ago, they charge £35 per point. These days it is probably more like £60. You can get a heads-up by completeing a licence check through a licencsed agent which will cost £6 (5 days) or £9 (overnight) Not only will that cover your rear in regards to the identity and registered address of the driver you are employing, but also tells you of any convictions - spend, current or pending. Once on 'record' they will automatically inform you if any are accrued as they happen. You will need the driver to sign a consent form to do this, but most expect it when applying for job anyway. The main benefit to the company is if the driver is banned for whatever reason, but does not tell you as he needs an income. This is more likely in todays financial climate. It also means tha even if they bring in a photocopy of a previously clean licence - you will know the true details! |

Just got my renewal through for the other vehicle premium doubled due to 2 minor scrapes but the second is the most annoying because it was a camper van driving too far over and caught my wing mirror. i was advised by my insurance not to claim but guess what he has put in a claim against me and now it has bumped my premium up £1000 you just can't win
