Got contacted on Friday by HMRC asking me how much a certain operator had been paying me in wages over the last 10 years? Seems like HMRC are cracking down on the Taxi Trade already.

about time bases got a visit, too much cash incoming with no receipts handed out

radio/car renters need to realise THEY are liable for tax on cash they cannot account for

all those on bases withdespatch systems need to realise HMRC can access the databases, if deliberate evasion is suspected they may go back 20 years for back tax

has the law changed? It has always been 6 years. I only have to keep records for 6 years and then I can destroy them.

Our base only keeps a record of jobs despatched. Date, time, name, pickup, destination - no price.

If HMRC wanted to check they'd have to go through every job a driver has done and work out how much each journey would have cost seperately. Suppose they could just do a week and then x52 to get an average, but I don't think it'd be worth the time and effort just on the offchance you'd underpaid a few hundred quid.

I think before that they'd have had reason to do a check and already looked at fuel receipts and bank statements etc. If you declare £10k earnings (profit) with £6k s worth of fuel and are paying in £40k they're going to want to know where the extra cash is coming from.

If HMRC consider the evasion deliberate then they can go back 20 years

Despatch systems hold bookings for eternity and not at the base, they will be stored on the despatch systems servers

HMRC dont even have to ask the base

any excess cash wouldnt be going into the drivers bank if he has any sense

you only need to keep your receipts for that long BUT if they want to there is no time limit on investigations they can go back 20 or 30 years if they want and if your records no longer exist well.............................................
