Will this make any difference, or it is just to stop folks fiddling their receipts? :?

Well basically it's saying that if someone is provided with a taxi home at their employer's expense then it will be treated as part of their earnings and thus taxable.

A bit like getting a company car - it's treated as a benefit-in-kind and basically added to salary.

As regards the trade, on balance it would deter the use of taxis by bar staff etc, so a negative for us.

Maybe if it's taxable then drivers and punters might just put a higher fare on the receipt.

But that means the employee will be paying more tax?

No, if the job goes a tenner and they get a receipt for £15, then the tax on that will be £2.60 and a bit of NI should make it up to £3.00.

So they will be £2.00 better off. \:D/ \:D/

I see what you're getting at, and while a barmaid and a taxi driver might be up for that, given that she'll need to give the receipt to give to her employer to claim the cash back then they they'll presumably be keeping a watch on the claims? I mean, some drivers won't join in so if the receipts are varing by £5 or so then the employer will wonder what's going on.

Also, a lot of that kind of stuff is account work, so it'll be fixed price and/or any variation will stick out like a sore thumb if someone audits it.

And since the HMRC seem to be clamping down on the issue it might be a good idea to have a proper audit trail?

And does the driver get a cut of this, or is he doing it just for the benefit of the punter? :-k

I think the driver is happy getting paid 100% for the job, unlike Bassetlaw cabs. [-X

But it would not surprise me a jot if the EU finally got around to making that meter directive (re: mandatory printers), law.
