That figure is optimistic to say the least.
Quote:
Air power would be used solely for city use, automatically activated below 43mph and available for ‘60 to 80 per cent of the time in city driving’. By 2020, the cars could be achieving an average of 117 miles a gallon, the company predicts.
So, in ideal conditions in 2020 the cars might achieve 117mpg average. This is a good concept, basically using a compressed air system to recoup the energy used when braking. However having a high-pressure compressed air system on board in addition to a petrol engine is just more things that can potentially go wrong, in comparison to an electric drivetrain which has 1 moving part. At any rate, they won't have a car on the road until at least 2016. We'll probably have more and better competition in the electric market by then.

Make it Mondeo sized and I'd have one.
£10k to buy, 3 minutes to refuel at a cost of £1, range 125-175 miles.

Still needs a source of electric to power lights, radio etc.

well does it not seem suspicious that we FIRST had steam cars, in WW1+WW2 we had methane powered cars, but from 1945 to 2014 we can have petrol or diesel cars and thats about it still doing 30-50mpg....(with a few useless hybrids)

NOW, with Tesla producing a viable 100% leccy car PSA comes up with a 120mpg car, if we can wait till 2020

No, it smacks of a conspiracy

How many IC engine plants would close when only an electric motor is needed, how much will governments lose in fuel duty if we can run all day on a 8 hour charge at home, where only 5% VAT is on the bill instead of 80% of the pump price of petrol/diesel?

You're right. However, Brussels is keen to get us driving greener vehicles and polluting less etc. So the government have to subsidise part of the cost of electric cars or vans, and not tax them. There are companies already in America making electric trucks and vans. Once the charging infrastructure gets up to scratch and commercial fleets start to adopt these vehicles, the oil industry will be turned on its head. And remember, not all countries pay anywhere near what we do for fuel. Some countries people pay 2p a litre #-o. Our government is just a bit more greedy.
