I like the new Octavia, but I'm not that keen on the new price for it.

just bought brand new superb for chauffer work ( dont get it for another 6/8 wks ...?? )
takes 3 mths to get my car built because of colors a specified !.
black magic pearlescent with full biege nappa leather trim .
fully loaded with color sat-nav / T.V. / elec seats ect..its the ELEGANCE model with 130bhp 1.9. diesel.

also thinking about a second hand E-class merc for the same job.
only in silver with black leather..... how good is the build workmanship...i heard is was not as good as the early mercs.. going down hill ?.
most of the merc thing is badge snobbery...but people still like to be picked up in a....merc !..we will see..

also have a 2 yr old skoda octavia 1.9 est for P/H work...

p.s....if the dam chauffer thing doesnt work out...i wil;l use the skoda and merc as a p/h  ...would be the best dam cars in the village

1 company bought one with the auto box and has no trouble 167k the last time I asked.

Going to take a lot of £2.50s to pay for that.

Nice motor, but with high spec mid-range cars like this, wouldn't it be better going for a cheaper exec class car like the Volvo S80, since the price for the former is pushing that for the latter?

Also, you talk about 'badge snobbery' re the Merc, but isn't there still a lot of reverse snobbery still attached to the Skoda marque?

dont like volvo...simple ! and i dont think i would get the goodies this thing has for the same price ...just over £17000.

as for the snobbery thing.... mercs i think now, are sold for the badge status, rather than the build quality / finish...they aint as good inside as they once were say around 10yr ago.. approx !.

and yes..as for the skoda..well.....people as slowly...very slowly, getting rid of the image of the old rear engine, tractor sounding heaps of 15yr ago, and for there cash, they are getting a hell of a lot for there £££££'s, compared to other cars in the same class.
my friend has the basic superb, and it gets some looks from people....as in..what the hell is it.....its a WHAT ? ..a skoda ? !!

i like my S80. 2 year old, 60k cost me a little over £10.5K came with 6 month warrenty too.
in last 9 months and 27K miles the only thing that went wrong was i blew the turbo boost pipe, which cost all of £30 to fix. front AND rear brake pads £56 easy DIY.
customers still impressed with the soft, smooth and almost silent ride.
i would buy another thats for sure.

Yes, the image problem with the Skoda badge is no doubt receding, but on the other hand to the extent that I agree that you're getting a lot of car for the money, then that's presumably why they're becoming quite common as mainstream taxis and PH in some locations.

Thus to that extent people might be more relectant to pay premium prices (presumably) for a chauffeur service using cars that are used in the mainstream trade elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I've thought along the same lines myself, but haven't taken the plunge yet, but my thinking has always been, why go for a top spec version of a car that's quite common in the trade when a low end executive motor doesn't cost a whole lot more?

Of course, I've also concluded, like you, that if you can't get the pukka work for the car then if you have to revert to the mainstream market then it's maybe better not having a car that might stand out too much.

mainstream taxi's..maybe yes but.... this aint your average superb...
it is the elegance model with a few extras......e.g. >

full beige nappa leather (incl doors/dash/gater ect ) 2x tv screens built into the headrests...dvd/mp3 player....full color sat nav with voice comand( freeview tv tuner incl....so i just found out !!!....
foot rest for rear passengers....drinks cabinet, with mini fridge in the boot...electric rear blinds....black rear privacy glass plus the usual elegance features....go to skoda home page and check it out....bloody great !.
for the merc i,m after...its only the E220cdi...and its around the £26000 mark with not half as much toys as the dam skoda...the extras push up the price on the merc to silly money...
so my problem is......do i go for a 2yr old merc E220cdi...or a new C-class merc.....i dont want to go into stretch limos.....no where to put the dam thing anyway !!....any other car that might be suitable for the job.. but NOT VOLVO [-X

Yes, I accept that, but I think to a large extent people look at the car model per se rather than what spec it is and how many toys it's got.

Thus to that extent you might be better spending £17k on a second hand E-class, say.

Anyway, you must be getting a huge discount, £17k with all those extras?

yes TDO... big discount  :D .
the P/H company that i work for at the moment, they get ALL there cars from the same garage...so i cut a deal with the very nice man @ skoda on the basis that they have sold 6 new cars to the P/H company( in the last 2 yrs ) and could they do me a deal ...big YES was the answer :D

£17000 on a second hand E class....er....remember....we have the 5 yr age thing up here...so i would be looking at around £21000 + for something decent and UNDER 5 yr old !.....maybe....maybe not...would need to look

but i am looking for another car..E class merc to compliment this one i am getting but.....taxi centre can do me one for around £ 115 p/w over 4 yrs...granted, it is only the E 220cdi diesel with hardly any toys, so to speak...has leather...

so i dunno....the jury is still out my friend...maybe get xmas out the way first then get another car..need to get another friggin house with own parking space first me thinks

ps..the drinks cab and fridge i have to put in myself..have em here just waiting for car

THE FIRST THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT CARS ARE NOT BUILT TO BE TAXI'S, I OWN A PEOPLE CARRIER AND WOULD NEVER BUY ANOTHER ONE, FOUR DRUNKS ARE ENOUGH!!!. I KNOW PEOPLE SLATE THEM, BUT I HAD A 2 LITRE PETROL OMEGA AND IT WAS BRILLIANT, 260 000 MILES SAME ENGINE AND GEARBOX AND NO MAJOR PROBLEMS. IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU DRIVE. DRIVE LIKE A MANIAC AND YOU WILL WEAR YOUR CAR OUT. OUR CARS EARN US OUR LIVING BUT IT'S FUNNY HOW MANY DRIVERS DON'T HAVE THEM SERVICED REGULAR(EVERY 6000 MILES, I KNOW THAT THE MANUFACTURERS SAY ABOUT 10000 MILES BUT THATS FOR A NORMAL BLOKE DOING ABOUT 100 MILES A WEEK). OUR CARS ARE TOOLS TO DO THE JOB, IF YOU WAS A PAINTER YOU BUY A NEW BRUSH PAINT 20 WALLS AND THEN THROW IT AWAY,IT'S EARNT YOU YOUR MONEY, SIMPLE. OUR CARS ARE NO DIFFERENT. MONDEO,OCTAVIA,406/407.VECTRA ETC ALL DO THE JOB.
