Now you know that's just not true
Any garage can work on a hybrid, the mechs just have to do a short course to familiarize themselves with the differences, mainly in isolating the electrical side. Plus the hybrid side is very, very, very reliable, a battery and two motors - what's to go wrong ?.

Do you reckon Toyota will train up non-dealer technicians?

Still wont seat 4 adults+driver though (with 4 suitcases)

Its obvious manufacturers have avoided making a "Mondeo" sized hybrid or leccy car so far, and most are pig ugly to boot, they are protecting IC sales, they want to be seen to be keen without harming sales

No I haven't but I know they have more legroom than required. What is the width of the rear seat? I can't seem to find this information.

Has your independent garage had its mechanics trained by Ford/VW/BMW/Mercedes/Toyota etc ?
Toyota actually run a hybrid familiarisation course that any mechanic can attend so that they are able to work on any hybrid vehicle. It explains how the system works and safety precautions needed when working with the high voltages involved.
The diagnostic software (Techstream) used by Toyota is freely available to buy by anyone for less than £300. A cutdown free version is also available to anyone who wishes to download it. All the technical service manuals covering the entire vehicle are also available to download from Toyota, some basic ones free the rest you pay for the ones you want.

So non Toyota trained technicians ARE quite capable of working on Toyota hybrids, all the resources are available to them. And I'll say again the hybrid parts are very reliable and unlikely to need a visit to Toyota for repair, the rest is identical to any other car on the road !

My Auris DOES seat 4 passengers and carry 4 suitcases as well, where do you get your facts from ?

If they're so bad then why are the taxi drivers round here not buying new Mondeos (second hand yes but not new) or Skodas (not even second hand ones) and getting brand new Auris hybrids ?
An £18k Mondeo with high service costs and £4k fuel a year, or £20k for a hybrid with low maintainence and £2k fuel a year ?? And after 7 years the Mondeos worth less than a grand, the hybrids still worth £8k !

heres my 2 week review of the new prius.. first of i am not a member of the prius fan club, i have drove allsorts of cabs.. and i have never had a hybrid before.. i dont do nites.. packed that game in 4 years ago..

It drives pretty nice.. loads of adjustment in the seating position.. and very comfortable to do a shift in
The boot.. fair sized boot dont n about getting 4 big cases.. had a few case in there...
leg room... yeh plenty in the back... had a lot worse...
looks... the front looks ok to me.... rear end a bit ugly but that dont bother me its a cab..

Now MPG...this is why i bought 1... i work bristol...20mph zones all over the city.. 1 of the worst conjested citys in the uk..
slow.. very slow at times... how does this car seem to work.. very good...i do like this hybird system...switching from petrol to EV with out even noticing... i am getting 70mpg avg... if i really whatch what i am doing i can get better...

on the motorway... last nite i drove from bristol to sandown racehorse 240mile round trip.. with the car running of petrol..
i top up with £20 before i left bristol... arrived back... and was on the same mark as i left... 240mile 20quid.... i was happy with that...
avg 68mpg my reading was....i do think the hybird comes into its own in the city.. doing a 5mile job today... i rekon 70% of the driving was on EV...or coasting down hills... thats when the battery regens... sitting in traffic no engine running... crawling along at 10mph no fule being burnt...put your foot down yeh the petrol kicks in... let of it goes back into EV... driving on 50mph-60mph.. it still kicks into Ev mode....thats what i think...
just to add loads of tech on there

active cruise control.. tried it on the motorway last nite.. set it to 75mph.. car slows down in front.. cars slow for you..car speeds up.. so do you
lane swerve assist.. stray from your lane.. warns u... then corrects your steering
few other things on there...rear vue cam... safety sense.. some one jumps out in front of you.. warns you and can brake...
heres a link to a review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFThSQMImDE

We have just filled the tank for the second time and it took 30 litres to fill it to the top. the miles completed since the last fill were 510. So a very creditable 77 miles to the gallon.
