£8k doesn't seem much - presumably if it's without reserve he would have to sell it if no one else bid higher?

Maybe someone should do a Live8 and bid £10 million for it.

Its a lovely cab - I wonder how much it will end up going for. There were 50 jubilee cabs registered in London, and only 14 in other areas I think.

I note the question from a potential buyer as to the suitability of licensing it for London.

I've the sneakiest of suspicions you have to buy it from new in London, or buy a second hand already plated one.

So not only are you restricted to LTI, you have to use a London LTI dealer.

Can you believe this practise in 2005?

I'm awaiting a call from John Thomas of the LTDA as I type, to clarify the situation.

Well according to Mr Thomas, its a very grey area with the PCO, with regards to paperwork, if it meets the specific conditions of fitness, you would think all TX2's are the same, but apparantly not!

So there you have it, the draconian PCO once again [edited by admin] your chances of shopping around.

One thing he did confirm, I could'nt go to Patons in Edinburgh and negotiate a deal for a new Taxi to be plated in London, because LTI forbid this amongst their dealers.

You could'nt make it up could you? LTI can.

And I still meet people who will say to me, 'why do we need a choice of Taxi vehicles in London?'

Move over, and i'll stick my head in your sandpit to. :-|

i thought such practices by manufactors and main dealers were stopped by the EU a few years ago? didn't the dealers spit their dummy out over the euro imports of main stream cars and then were told to shut up by the EU?

I would really love to see that in writing. As no doubt would the Office of Fair Trading.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there seems to be two issues here:

1 You would have to have the TX restested in London because it's not currently plated there.

I think that's fairly standard practice in the UK, indeed I think that even in the same LA if a vehicle is transferred to another owner then it has to be retested.

2 LTI won't let you buy new from a dealer in Edinburgh.

How do they enforce this? The only way I can think of is that they could refuse to service it and/or honour warranty claims.

I'm sure the OFT looked at issues like this a couple of years ago, so as Sussex says they might be worth contacting.

I suspect its a 'code of honour' (amongst thiefs?) thing between the LTI dealers? I would hazard a guess an official denial would be forthcoming, but as we have come to expect with LTI what they put into writing and what they actualy do are two different things.

IE: http://www.ltda.co.uk/taxi/issue_95/pg26.htm

I'll call the PCO and see what they say, I have to admit if its going for under £13k i'll bid on it myself.

Yes it would have to be retested for a London plate, but according to John thats where the problem arises, something to do with the paperwork issued with a Taxi when first used in London?

I always believed as most do, one LTI model is built to the same as the other, but apparantly all the London models are built to the specific 'London' conditions.

Its almost unbelievable, but when the 'PCO' name appears, little surprises me.

As the signature says.

I see - I didn't realise that the London TXs were a different spec to elsewhere - what's the difference?

Havent the foggiest.

The PCO told me to send them details of the proposed Taxi that I wanted plating, and they would look into it (whatever that means).

The bids over £15K, so i've lost interest.

I'm going to my garage, Colt Cabs in Bethnal Green next week for a door handle, the guy that runs it rents out a huge fleet of Taxis, i'll try to find out a more definative answer on this buying restriction.

Yes, it seemed strange the way it was stuck at around 8k for a couple of days, particularly since the bloke in the LTDA letter spent 28k on a two-year-old. Very low mileage though, I wonder how it managed to do less than 10,000 in two years. I reckon he was had. :?
