Toyota taxi to rival London black cab

Japanese car maker Toyota has unveiled its take on the iconic London black taxi

Blimey Guv. The Toyota taxi is designed to be user-friendly, with low emissions

Toyota's vision for a new generation of Japanese taxis looks like something you might be flagging down in Shoreditch rather than Shinjuku.

The JPN Taxi Concept will be shown on Toyota's stand at the Tokyo motor show on November 20, where it's making its world debut. It remains to be seen whether it will be hailed a breakthrough.

The taxi has been conceived by Toyota in line with the Japanese government's programme for designing buses and taxis that are more user-friendly.

The vehicle's proportions and packaging have been tailored to give it the manoeuvrability that's essential in urban traffic. It also features a high cabin, low floor and electric sliding door to provide access easy for passengers, especially children and older people.

The cab seats five and is equipped with a large monitor displaying passenger information, including the route to the destination and the fare.

Those of you fed up with sooty London cabs will be glad to learn that the JPN Taxi Concept has a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) hybrid system that offers better environmental performance in urban areas.

According to Toyota, it's not yet known whether the JPN Taxi will take you south of Tokyo's Tama River after 10pm.

This is fine downtown Ōshima with the Japanese and their impeccable manners. But drive it down Nottingham (Sorry Nottinghamers) or any other such town and city and youll have this ruined to s%$£^ in about 20 mins!

But unless it is a WAV, it isn't going to rival the London black cab is it?

Anything is surly an improvement 40 years ago in the iconic Black London taxi with a rover engine and five up you struggled to reach the top of Highgate Hill the trade has endured some awful vehicles with the bullet proof Nissan engine best of the bunch.

Im sure there was a Norwegian or swedish WAV that was used as a taxi and it lowered itself down to get the WC in

It seats 5 including driver, the same as a saloon, and as mentioned is not a WAV. It also doesn't have the partition. So not really a worthy rival for the black cab then.

I doubt that will happen, and if it does I think most drivers will still drive WAVs anyway.
